Senior year at The Storm King School is usually marked by events that allow seniors to celebrate their accomplishments, develop a sense of community, and make lifetime friendships. Many of these events, such as the Senior Retreat, were put on pause this year, but that didn’t stop members of the National Honor Society from stepping in to help.

On Thursday, November 19, NHS members organized a special evening just for the senior class– a Senior Dinner followed by a bonfire. The effort was led by NHS President Shayla Lawrence ’21, senior class representative Pep Viveros, along with a committee of NHS seniors. They rallied students to decorate the tables in Orr Commons along with NHS advisor Mrs. Hecht, coordinate with Chef Andrew and the dining hall staff on the menu, and put together a slideshow of senior photos to be shown during the evening. After dinner, the students participated in socially distanced bonfires run by faculty members where they played games and enjoyed hot chocolate and s’mores.

“It was a really nice evening. I am so thankful for having a reason to dress up,” commented senior Olivia O’Blaney. “We all had to sit at a distance and wear masks, but it was still a lot of fun. I’m happy that we did something together just for seniors,” continued senior Emily Elizabeth Kent. Shayla, along with her NHS colleagues, also commented after the event: “The evening was meant to give the seniors some sort of relief despite the chaos and stress that surrounds us during these strange times. Overall, it was a success and everyone enjoyed themselves!”

Many thanks go to all of the students and faculty who helped put together this special night for our seniors, and kudos to Shayla and the NHS for all of their hard work.
