The spring athletic season ended with a bang at The Storm King School, with four varsity teams concluding their competitive schedules and three others proudly sporting the Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship trophy.

The boys tennis team enjoyed several wins leading up to the HVAL championship tournament on May 17. Following a loss to the Hamden Hall Hornets, the Marvelwood Pterodactyls and the Oakwood Lions succumbed to the Cougars’ winning momentum, advancing Storm King to the HVAL tournament as the #1 seed. Facing the Pterodactyls once again for the trophy, the Cougars claimed victory in straight sets, 6-0, in singles and 8-2 in doubles. Coach Feffer was very pleased with the team’s performance this season: “The boys had another strong showing this season both in the HVAL and the non-league teams we played, despite our loss of practice and match time due to bad weather. We dominated the semifinal against Oakwood, winning all 9 singles matches, giving up a total of only 3 games out of 40. In doubles, we dropped a few games, but still came out on top. At the final versus Northern Academy, wins by Sagan N. ’25 (10-2), Emilio C. ’27 (10-6), Arturo S. ’24 (10-1), and Mohanad A. ’25 (10-6) brought us to a 6-3 win in singles, and our doubles teams of Jimmy L. ’25/Yusei S. ’25 (8-0) and Arturo /Mohanad (8-6) clinched the victory with the help of a 3rd doubles win by default.”

Following schedule changes and a disappointing loss to Woodstock in early May, the Cougars continued to give it their all on the courts when their schedule continued against Harvey’s JV team. The down time served the Cougars well, with strong serving and consistent play bringing them three consecutive home game wins against Northern Academy (4-0), Woodstock (4-3), and Marvelwood (6-1) to close out their spring season and carry them to the HVAL finals. Their winning momentum continued at the HVAL finals, where the Cougars won over the Pterodactyls, 7-1, to take the trophy. Coach Finn-Atkins was proud of the team’s performance this year: “We worked hard and had some mixed results this season, but we are thrilled to end as the HVAL champions!”

The SKS baseball team entered the month of May with an exciting win against Faith Christian Academy, hoping to carry their winning momentum through to their last games of the season. As with the other SKS teams, wet weather took its toll early in the month and the Cougars were on the diamond only once more against Greens Farms Academy, where they suffered a disappointing loss, 0-15, to the Dragons.

Despite the setback, the Cougars roared into the HVAL championship tournament on May 20, winning the trophy with a score of 6-5 over the Oakwood Lions. “SJ L. ’24 pitched four strong innings and broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the sixth inning with a triple and a run scored. Logan K. ’27 pitched three scoreless innings of relief and had a single of his own. Despite these individual performances, it took a team effort. The final inning saw SKS pull off a wacky double play before Logan struck out the final batter to seal the victory. Thank you to our seniors, SJ, Alex K. ’24, Emily R. ’24, Sadie K. ’24, and Bryan K. ’24. We will miss you next season,” commented Coach Gillett.

After two disappointing losses to Millbrook and Holy Child to close out April, the girls lacrosse team entered May with determination to turn the tides in their favor. Unfortunately, wet weather early in the month led to several cancellations until the Cougars were back on the field facing off in back-to-back games against the Hamden Hall Hornets and the Millbrook Mustangs. The Storm King players fought hard against a strong Hamden Hall team, but were ultimately outplayed by the Hornets ending in a loss, 2-18. When they faced the Mustangs the following day, the Cougars’ determination didn’t waver and they succeeded in keeping the score close throughout the game, with Millbrook scoring a late point to take the win, 8-9. Coaches Beckham and Cervantes agreed that the team put in a great effort all season: “They really came together as a team and played 110% every second of every game. We’re very proud of them and the team should be proud. Now, we’re looking forward to next season and what’s to come.”

The SKS varsity boys lacrosse team was on a mission this year, regrouping and dedicating themselves to sharpening their skills on the field. The Cougars experienced tough losses all season, but the setbacks haven’t dampened their spirits. Instead, the team is using them as motivation to work even harder and improve. “Our record doesn’t reflect the skills and determination demonstrated by this team. We are determined and keeping a positive mindset, and we are eager to continue developing our skills on the field next season,” explained Coach Hammell.

The Ultimate Frisbee team added two more wins to their roster in May. The Cougars’ signature teamwork and great play were on full display when they faced NYMA on May 1, bringing home a 15-11 win. Their next competition at Oakwood proved to be a tough game leaving SKS at the bottom of a 7-15 score.  The Cougars rallied when they hosted Northern Academy later in the month, sailing to a comfortable 15-3 victory. The Ultimate team ended their season hosting NYMA at point-for-point match with the Knights. The Cougars fought hard keeping the score close, ending three points short of the win. 14-16, to close out the season. “We had another strong year with some mixed results. I am very proud of the team’s accomplishments,” commented Coach Fulton.

Heading into May, the varsity boys volleyball team was on the road to Iona Prep for a rematch following their previous win on the road earlier in the season. The Cougars went in with strong serving from Ren T. ‘26 and Ryan W. ‘24, plus exciting play at the net by Zimo Y. ‘26. Their efforts yielded a win in three games 25-23, 25-13, 26-24.  On May 1, the Cougars hosted an athletic EF Academy team where they fought hard to keep up the winning momentum. “The team was energetic and competitive. Zimo had four blocks, but we lost in three games 25-19, 25-16, 25-15,” continued Coach Cunningham. To close their season on a high note, the Cougars hosted the American School for the Deaf on May 15, winning in 3 sets. “I am very proud of how the boys competed and worked as a team this year,” said Coach Cunningham, commending the entire team for their collective effort.
