The Storm King School is buzzing with activity as 190 young scholars from 24 countries and eight states arrive for the 2019-2020 school year. Tuesday, August 27, is registration day for new international and day students, where they finalize their academic schedules and get to know their teachers and their new surroundings.
During registration day, students and families spend the morning checking in at various tables set up in Orr Commons and around the campus, meeting with the Dean of Academics to finalize their classes, and signing up for fall athletic teams and activities. After lunch, families have the option of going on a student-led tour of the campus and attending a Parents’ Meeting in Ogden Hall. After their families depart in the evening, the newcomers get acquainted at their first dinner on campus before settling into their dormitories for some much-needed rest.
The remainder of orientation week features trips and activities geared toward immersing new international students in American history, culture, and fun. Students will participate in community service activities at the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, visit the Storm King Art Center, hike in Black Rock Forest, and go to the movies and shopping. The week culminates in an exciting four-day cultural excursion to the former home of George Washington at Mount Vernon, NJ, then on to the nation’s capital Washington, D.C., and a day of fun at Knoebels Amusement Park in Pennsylvania.
During their stay in Washington, D.C., the group will visit the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Hard Rock Cafe, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and Museum of Natural History, the National Mall and the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Before heading back to New York and Storm King, the students will experience the rides, fun, and excitement at Pennsylvania’s Knoebles Amusement Park. To top off the trip, the group will stop for a final morning of shopping at the Crossings Premium Outlets before they return to campus on Monday evening, September 2. The fall semester will begin with the first day of school on Wednesday, September 4.
