NYC’s East Village Comes to the Mountain

Karen Fleisch, fashion designer and veteran of New York City’s East Village, traveled to Storm King on Friday, October 5, to give a fascinating workshop in Ms. Liggett’s Fashion Design class. During her presentation, Ms. Fleisch outlined her career in the world of Rock ‘n Roll, Steampunk, and Cosplay (costume design) as head of her own label, designer for Simplicity patterns, and custom designer for musicians including “Miami” Steve Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

Ms. Fleisch spoke to the students about the complex technicalities of sewing her designs, as well as her career as a fashion entrepreneur. She also gave the students advice about college and career start-up and critiqued the students’ own work. “Her caring and knowledgeable comments were inspirational for our young designers, some of whom are making college decisions within the next few months. It was an awesome visit,” explained Visual and Performing Arts Chair John Carruthers.
