Headmaster Jonathan Lamb has announced that New York State Assemblyman James Skoufis will speak at The Storm King School’s 150th Commencement this June. According to Headmaster Lamb, Mr. Skoufis will offer the seniors “many meaningful words before they head out into the world.”
Mr. Skoufis was born in Flushing, Queens, in 1987. His family moved north to the Town of Woodbury, New York, in 1995, where he has resided for more than 20 years. After attending high school there, Mr. Skoufis went on to earn his B.A. summa cum laude from The George Washington University and his M.A. from Columbia University.
In 2012, Mr. Skoufis was elected to the New York State Assembly in the 99th District. Now serving his third term in office, he represents the Orange County towns of Blooming Grove, Chester, Cornwall, Goshen, Hamptonburgh, Highlands, New Windsor, Wawayanda, and Woodbury as well as the Rockland County town of Stony Point. Mr. Skoufis married his loving wife, Hillary, in 2017.
Prior to his election, Mr. Skoufis was a project manager at an electronic security firm and a member of the Woodbury Town Board. While on the Town Board, Mr. Skoufis distinguished himself in the wake of Hurricane Irene by leading the local relief effort and helping affected families obtain food, shelter, and financial assistance.
Having spent most of his life in the New York area, Mr. Skoufis understands the struggles of many Hudson Valley families and has been a strong advocate for his working- and middle-class constituents in the Assembly. His principal motivation as an elected official is to level the playing field and be a voice for the underserved and the voiceless. Mr. Skoufis has also been a fierce advocate for smart job creation with good pay and benefits, rebuilding New York’s aging infrastructure, a better health care system, and schools that have the resources they need.
The Storm King School’s 150th Commencement exercises are scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at 10 am.
