It has been an incredible fall season for athletics at The Storm King School. All four of our sports teams, namely boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball and cross country, finished their seasons with outstanding records and valiant play, while three teams brought home the HVAL trophy. It was also the first time in SKS history that all four teams qualified for the NEPSAC tournaments.
CROSS COUNTRY
With the guidance and expertise of coaches, our cross country harriers completely dominated HVAL this year, finishing the season undefeated. To top off their success, they travelled to Maine for the NEPSAC Division IV Championship Race held at the Hyde School on November 12. Storm King finished 7th out of 29 schools and nearly 200 runners. Keegan Jemal finished first for Storm King and 31st in the race. Close behind him were the harrier’s power squad of Misha Medvedev, who finished at 41, Lorenzo Pretto at 53, Sebastian Zucker at 54, and Cem Taviloglu at 75 to round out the scoring.
SEASON STATS: Wins: 8 Losses: 0 / NEPSAC: 7th Place
GIRLS SOCCER
While the harriers dominated, the girls varsity soccer team, headed by coach Barbosa, was busy cleaning the HVAL house. Their magic number was 11 as they stormed through the semifinal match 11 -2 and took the championship match 11-0, beating long-time rival Oakwood. The team achieved an important milestone in SKS athletic history by becoming the first girls’ soccer team to win the HVAL championship for our school. Team captain and senior Cierra Martin will graduate this coming spring with a record to be proud of, scoring 98 career goals during her time at SKS. The girls went on to the NEPSAC quarterfinals where they played relentlessly but fell against the 2nd highest seeded team in New England, Christian Heritage, ending a season to be proud of.
SEASON STATS: Wins: 11 Losses: 6
BOYS SOCCER
Boys varsity soccer, under the command of coach Graziosi, was a force to be reckoned with this year with their overall record at 18-5-1. Their momentum continued as they emerged undefeated from the HVAL tournament, taking home the trophy after an epic home win against Marvelwood on November 12. The team’s superb performance led the boys to the NEPSAC quarterfinals as the second highest ranked team in Class D tournament (out of 64 schools). Excitement reached its pinnacle when our boys defeated Brimmer and May in the round of eight. It was the first time in SKS soccer history that our boys have advanced into the FINAL FOUR of New England’s prep school soccer tournament. In the semi finals, a Storm King team depleted by injuries put up a valiant effort falling to NEPSAC’s 3rd highest seed, The Master’s School. Our boys soccer team finished the season at the top of their game and made the entire SKS community proud.
SEASON STATS: Wins: 18 Losses: 5 Ties: 1
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
With coach McMahon at the helm, the girls varsity volleyball team had an admirable season this fall with their overall standings at 9 wins – 7 losses. The girls showed off their prowess on the court in the HVAL semifinal match, defeating rival Marvelwood 3-0, but fell to Faith Christian by the same score, losing 0-3 in the final match on November 11. To end the season, their record of excellent sportsmanship and play took them to the NEPSAC quarterfinals, where they faced King School, the top ranked school in New England. Following the tournament, our girls qualified as the #8 seed in NEPSAC, claiming their place as one of the SKS Fab Four teams.
SEASON STATS: Wins: 9 Losses: 7
According to SKS Athletic Director Joseph Graziosi and their coaches, “all four SKS teams finished the season with solid performances in the NEPSAC finals in different states across New England…and all our student athletes were winners this season. SKS has much to be proud of thanks to them.”
