Six spring Cougar teams have concluded their competitive seasons on a positive note, and five teams have moved on to play in the HVAL semifinal round this week.

All eyes are on the Storm King Ultimate team, who maintained their undefeated record at the HVAL semifinal game this week. On Wednesday, 5/18, the Cougars faced the Darrow Ducks here on the Mountain, with their signature teamwork and great play on full display for a cheering group of fans.”We played a very strong match in which Tyson C. ’24 and Chris S. ’22 had the most scores, with Nicolas C. ’26 catching the game-winner,” commented Coach Fulton. “Other highlights included stellar defense from Anna N. ’22 and Lou H. ’22, and several assists from Cedric Z. ’23.” The Cougars’ winning score of 14-4 over the Ducks advances the Cougars to the league championship final to be played at NYMA on Friday, May 20 at 4 PM. Go, Cougars!

Storm King Baseball finished their season on a high note, despite their loss hosting NYMA for their HVAL semifinal game on Wednesday, 5/18. Nathan K. of NYMA pitched a 1-hitter and struck out seven batters in a 5-inning game where the mercy rule came into play. Daniel B. ’22 had the lone SKS hit, driving in Jack M. ’23 for the Cougars’ only run of the day. “As Storm King ends its season, we say goodbye and thank you to our three seniors Daniel, Michael H. ’22, and Yihan K. ’22.  SKS will look to the underclassmen returners in 2023 to improve upon this season’s 2-6 campaign,” commented Coach Gillett.

This spring, Boys Lacrosse was highlighted by good sportsmanship and a lot of first-hand learning on the field. In their final game of the season, the Cougars fought hard hosting the Marvelwood Pterodactyls on Saturday, 5/14, but their efforts weren’t enough to produce a win. They did advance to the HVAL semifinal round, facing Marvelwood once again on Wednesday, 5/18, at the Pterodactyls’ home field in Kent, Connecticut. After a strong effort and a lot of heart, the Cougars fell to their opponent. According to Coach Bennett, the Cougars have a lot to be proud of this season.

In their last two games of the season, the girls lacrosse team demonstrated their skills learned throughout the spring and finished on a positive note. Their game versus Hamden Hall on Friday, 5/13 was highlighted by goals from Anora M. ’22 and Kaiti B. ’23, plus great defensive play by Nicole T. ’24, Maria T. ’22, and Maria C. ‘24. According to Coach McMahon, the Cougars played well against an experienced team despite their loss. The same held true at their final match against the Millbrook School on Saturday, 5/14, with goals from Anora, Kaiti, and Andy H. ‘22. “Our team progressed well all spring and finished on a positive note,” commented McMahon reflecting on the season.

The boys tennis team closed out a successful spring season on Wednesday, 5/11, when the Cougars overcame the Marvelwood Pterodactyls on the SKS courts in a 9-0 shutout. Their win advances them to the HVAL championship final match versus Oakwood Friends on Thursday, 5/19 at 3:30 PM on the SKS courts, weather permitting.

The girls tennis team ended their season last week with a loss to St. Luke’s on Wednesday, 5/11, but their efforts advanced them to the HVAL semifinal round. In hopes of playing in championship final, the Cougars will host the Oakwood Lions on Friday, 5/20, at 2:30.

Good luck to the SKS Ultimate, Boys Tennis, and Girls Tennis teams as they continue in HVAL competition this week. Congratulations to all of the Storm King spring teams and their coaches for their achievements and great sportsmanship this year!
