Stage Craft

Students explore how visual storytelling shapes the audience’s theatrical experience by designing three-dimensional environments for the stage. Coursework emphasizes script analysis, research, conceptual development, drafting, drawing, scale model construction, and professional presentation techniques. Students learn how to transform a written play into an engaging physical setting while developing both artistic vision and technical design skills.

This introductory technical theater course provides students with hands-on experience in the essential elements of theatrical production. Students learn to construct scenery, safely use theater tools, hang and focus lighting instruments, and explore the many technical systems that support live performance. Through collaborative projects, students gain a practical understanding of how professional productions are built from concept to opening night.

Building upon the foundations established in Stagecraft & Design, Advanced Stagecraft places students in leadership roles during the School’s Winter and Spring productions. Students design and program lighting and sound cues, construct and paint scenery, troubleshoot technical challenges, and help manage production workflows. By the end of the course, students develop proficiency in the technical, organizational, and collaborative skills required to mount a fully realized theatrical production.
