The fall semester is well underway at The Storm King School, and the school community has settled into the familiar rhythms of life on the Mountain. Just beyond their classrooms, however, an extraordinary transformation is taking place as the new Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center rises on campus.
Construction Progress on the Fischer Academic Center
Day by day, progress on the Fischer Academic Center is increasingly visible. From the outside, the building has undergone a dramatic change in recent months with the roof, windows, and exterior siding being finished. Inside, walls and sheetrock are in place, electrical and plumbing work are nearing completion, and the classrooms and common areas are beginning to look like the spaces students and faculty will teach and learn in.
The progress is a striking reminder of how far the project has come since the groundbreaking in March 2026 and the construction tour offered to members of the Storm King community during Reunion Weekend. What was once a construction site is increasingly recognizable as a new academic hub for the School.
What the New Academic Center Will Include
The $3.5 million project will expand the School’s academic capacity from five classrooms to 10, while also renovating Dyar Hall. The completed Academic Center will include modern classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, innovation and design labs, a faculty space, an open-air courtyard classroom, and the Warren P. Leonard Lobby, designed as a gathering point for students, faculty, and the broader community.
Supporting the Storm King Experience
The building is also central to the School’s evolving approach to teaching and learning. The Academic Center will support the Storm King Experience, an interdisciplinary framework that connects classroom learning with experiential education, collaboration, leadership, environmental research, innovation, and real-world problem solving. The result will be more than additional classroom space—it will provide new opportunities for students to learn, create, collaborate, and connect.
A Transformational Gift
In June, the School announced that the building would be named the Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center in recognition of a transformational $1 million gift from alumnus, trustee, and longtime supporter Michael Fischer ’82, honoring the legacy of his parents while investing in future generations of Storm King students.
Looking Ahead to Opening Day
Now, with each passing week, the vision behind the project is becoming easier to see. Students walk past the building on their way to class, faculty and staff watch the progress from campus, and alumni, families, and friends of the School follow its development with anticipation.
Soon, the construction crews will leave and the classrooms will begin to fill. The School and the entire Storm King community are looking forward to the day when the doors open, students enter their new classrooms, and the first classes are held in the Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center.
