The Storm King School is proud to announce that its new Academic Center, currently under construction as part of the School’s ongoing strategic development, will be named ‘The Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center’ in recognition of a landmark $1 million gift from alumnus, trustee, and longtime supporter Michael Fischer ’82.

The gift represents both a deeply personal tribute to Mr. Fischer’s late parents and a lasting investment in the future of Storm King students: “For me, this gift is about honoring my parents, whom I worship and adore, while also giving back to the School that changed the course of my life. I was compelled to realize my father’s and my mutual vision of leaving a legacy for The Storm King School.”

The Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center will serve as the hub of academic life on campus, providing modern learning spaces designed to support collaboration, innovation, and student success for generations to come.

Head of School Lisa Shambaugh said the gift reflects the very best of the Storm King community: “Michael’s story is a reminder of the transformational impact this school can have on a student’s life. His extraordinary generosity and lifelong commitment to Storm King will leave a lasting legacy for future generations of students.”

Mr. Fischer, of Westchester County, New York, first arrived at The Storm King School to attend the 10th grade. Drawn initially by Storm King’s ski team and wilderness program, he quickly discovered something more profound: a community that recognized his potential.

Under the mentorship of former Headmaster Thad Horton, guidance counselor and ski coach Jack America, Outdoor Program leader Matt Culberson, and other faculty members, Mr. Fischer found encouragement, structure, and confidence. What began as a challenging adjustment evolved into a transformative experience that shaped the trajectory of his life. Mr. Fischer later became a prefect, served two years as captain of the ski team, and represented his class as Senior Class Representative.

“It was such an evolution,” he said. “The most transitional time in my life. If I didn’t attend Storm King, I might not be where I am today.”

The Fischer family’s legacy is rooted in hard work, humility, and generosity. Mr. Fischer’s father built one of New York City’s major construction companies during the second half of the twentieth century, contributing to landmark projects including the Jacob Javits Center, Citicorp Center, and the AT&T Building.

Following his graduation from Storm King in 1982, Mr. Fischer attended Colorado Mountain College and New England College before beginning his career in construction and real estate management. A longtime supporter of the School, Mr. Fischer served as an SKS Trustee from 1995 to 2005 and again today (2024-present).

“My parents gave me tremendous love and support,” said Mr. Fischer. “As long as I am capable, my heart will always be there for Storm King.” The decision to support the School in such a significant way grew out of conversations Mr. Fischer shared with his father in the years before his passing in 2021. “Living up to my dad’s wishes while helping future students succeed means everything to me.”

Mr. Fischer hopes that decades from now, Storm King School students will live the spirit behind the building’s name as part of their daily life. “I want them to walk across campus saying, ‘Fischer Academic Center’ — that will be my legacy,” he said.
