Full enrollment is no longer news at The Storm King School. For several years running, we have opened the school year at capacity, and this fall, with 180 students, was no exception.
Demand by the Numbers
This year, 215 families applied for 77 new places. Applications have increased by 67 percent since 2022 and have more than doubled since 2014. Our day-student spaces, sought by families across the Hudson Valley, filled by April, and a waitlist formed.
The demand is measurable. The students who arrived represent every continent except Antarctica. A record 90 are from the United States; the other 90 come from 22 countries, among them China, Japan, Spain, Slovakia, Rwanda, Brazil, and Australia. This year’s roster also includes 14 AP scholars, a school record.
The full house breaks down this way: 118 boarding students and 62 day students; 101 boys, 78 girls, and one nonbinary student; and a senior class 47 strong. Our junior class consists of 48 students, and we welcomed 41 sophomores, 39 freshmen, and five eighth-graders.
We never take a year like this for granted. As National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) president Debra P. Wilson put it in the latest issue of Independent School magazine, “schools are increasingly confronting the demographic cliff: There are simply fewer school-age children.” She adds that uncertainty is making families more cautious about long-term financial commitments. Meanwhile, the path for international students has grown less certain, and many small boarding schools are feeling the strain. Storm King is writing a different story.
Why Families Choose the Mountain
Students come to the Mountain for our academic, arts, and athletic programs, and for the remarkable teachers and coaches who lead them. We offer about 130 courses, from AP and honors sections to electives in fashion design and computer science, with a student-teacher ratio of 5 to 1. Our students paint, throw pots, make films, dance, and act in spaces like the Allison Vladimir Art Center and the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre.
On the fields and courts, our Cougars compete in the Hudson Valley Athletic League and the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council, with 19 varsity, junior varsity, and club options.
Fifty-three percent of our faculty and staff live on campus, where they coach, advise, and share meals with students; when we say “You will be known here,” we mean it literally. Recent graduates have gone on to UPenn, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, the University of Chicago, UCLA, Michigan, and many other top-rated universities across the country.
Others have noticed. Niche’s 2027 rankings place us in the top five among New York’s boarding high schools, ahead of Hackley, the Masters School, Millbrook, and Trinity-Pawling. It is not the first time we have outpaced better-known names.
Building What’s Next
The School’s next chapter is nearly built. The new Irving and Muriel Fischer Academic Center, with a terrace looking out over the Hudson River Valley, is on track to open this November. The project pairs new construction with a renovation of Dyar Hall, doubling its classrooms from five to ten and adding a STEM lab, innovation and design labs, and an open-air courtyard classroom. It will be a fitting home for this year’s students and new generations of students for years to come. At a moment when many small schools are bracing for the future, The Storm King School is building one.
