Spring is around the corner at The Storm King School and the Office of College Counseling is busier than ever. As college acceptances continue to arrive for the senior class, the school calendar is filling up quickly with college-related events for juniors and underclassmen.

The first events take place right after the students return from Spring Break and run through the middle of May. These include off-campus college visits and several college fairs. According to Storm King’s Director of College Counseling Martha Kwon, these types of events are designed to help students at the start of the college search and application process who wish to identify potential schools that appeal to them.

“College Fairs allow students to see larger numbers of schools at one location making them a convenient option, especially for our boarding students. At the upcoming fairs, like the Orange County College Night on April 30, students will have to chance to meet with nearly 150 schools! It’s a perfect event for juniors and even underclassmen who are just starting their college search,” explains Mrs. Kwon. “On the other hand, college campus visits like the ones planned to Rutgers University and Marist College are also useful for the students, even if they aren’t interested in those particular schools. They serve as great practice before attending open houses and private visits at other colleges,” she continues.

Throughout the spring, Mrs. Kwon also plans to continue one-on-one sessions with the junior class to discuss possible colleges and career paths, begin to review the Common Application, and determine other areas where the students may need assistance.  In addition, the spring SAT prep courses, which began in February, will resume on March 23 leading up to the SAT exam on May 4 which is required for juniors.

Spring is also an important time for seniors who must enroll in their college of choice by May 1. “To date, the senior class has seen acceptances from prestigious colleges and universities including Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, Colorado School of Mines, Purdue, Fordham, Seton Hall, American University, Rutgers, Syracuse, UMASS Amherst, University of Illinois, and Bard College among others; and there are more to come. It’s such an exciting time at Storm King, and I’m thrilled to help all of our students and their families during this important time in their lives. I can’t wait for May 1,” says Mrs. Kwon.
