Everyone emerged a winner following our Valentine’s Day athletic games, even though the final scores were mixed. With a little help from their friends, the Storm King boys varsity basketball team put on a great show as they hosted rival NYMA on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 pm.

The first night game of the season got off to a great start with a fitting speech about sportsmanship by Athletic Director Joseph Graziosi. Next, the Valentine’s Day crowd was treated to the pomp and circumstance of a color guard parade followed by the national anthem sung by junior Allegra Walker.

Cheerleaders for both teams rallied the fans before tip-off and the atmosphere was electric. The crowd cheered wildly as the Cougars gained a 10-point lead early in the first half.  NYMA caught up quickly, however, eroding the Cougar’s score at a steady pace. At half-time, an enthusiastic routine by the SKS cheerleaders and Ms. Nolan’s antics on her unicycle kept school spirit high, but NYMA’s persistent play prevailed with the Cougars falling to their Cornwall rival 59-79.

In true Storm King spirit, the score didn’t phase Coach Alan Lewis, who was very pleased with the outcome and thanked his team, coaching staff, and all who came out to support them:  “The environment was awesome, and we were so proud and excited to play. Obviously, we were hoping for a different outcome, but that doesn’t detract from the great scene you all helped create.”

As a prelude to the varsity game at home, the JV boy Cougars kicked off the afternoon by defeating NYMA 38-28. Junior Igor Zelenko came off the bench to play a key role in helping the Cougars sweep the season series with their Cornwall opponents.

The positive energy on the Mountain also made it across the Hudson River when the girls varsity basketball team soundly defeated Poughkeepsie Day School 36-17 in their second regular season match-up. While they started off slowly leading by just four points at half-time, the girls really opened up in the second half. Senior Elizabeth Pomeroy garnered four points and six steals and junior Shania Roerich cruised into to the team record book with this years’ first triple-double, earning double digit points, rebounds, and steals.

Wednesday was also a great day for the SKS Bowling Team who won a double team tournament against NYMA and FCA 2-0, 2-0. According to Coach McMahon, their success is due to the efforts of junior Alonso Gonzalez Reynaud, sophomore Igor Klimtsov, senior Michael Pelton, 8th grader Santiago De la Garza Almaguer, and sophomore Liwei Wang who was subbed in at the last moment to avoid a forfeit and netted a pair of spares. The team stands with an 11-1 season record and faces Faith Christian Academy on February 24.
