The fall semester is winding to a close at Storm King and our students are working hard to finish their classes on a high note and study for upcoming final exams. There to help them succeed, especially in subjects where they may need extra support, are the National Honor Society (NHS) Peer Tutors.

The Peer Tutoring Program is organized and run by NHS members and all peer tutors are students who have demonstrated a high proficiency in the subjects they tutor. Leading the peer tutoring effort are seniors Dominique Gooden and Thinh Tran.

“There are many benefits from working with a peer tutor,” explained Thinh during a recent presentation to the school community. “You will have a more personal learning experience with a lot of interaction, and you may feel more comfortable working with a fellow student rather than an adult.” “Peer tutoring is also beneficial for the tutor,” continued Dominique. “It gives the tutor a chance to reinforce their own knowledge of the subject they are tutoring.”

“Final exams are upon us, so don’t waste any time,” explained Dominique. “Contact us and get help from a peer tutor now. If you are wondering how we can help, one study tip would be to make a practice test for each class. Cover all of the content that you learned and make sure to have a mix of multiple-choice questions, matching questions, and essay questions.”

“Another study tip would be to pair up and learn together with a buddy from your class,” added Thinh. “For people who are easily distracted by TV or videos, turn on something you have already seen. You will be able to focus on the learning process more than if you turn on something completely new.”

There are 23 peer tutors available in various subjects and tutoring services will be available to all students throughout finals week and the end of the semester, which is Friday, December 11. Interested students and faculty should e-mail their request to peertutors@sks.org to schedule an appointment or get more information. Teachers can also request peer tutors for students they feel would benefit from the service.
