The spring athletic season wound to a close on Storm King Mountain with three teams finishing their competitive schedules and three others bringing home the Hudson Valley Athletic League (HVAL) championship trophy.

The undefeated boys tennis team enjoyed several wins in May leading up to the HVAL championship tournament. The Marvelwood Pterodactyls, Oakwood Lions, and the Hamden Hall Hornets all succumbed to the Cougars’ winning momentum advancing Storm King to the HVAL tournament as the #1 seed. Facing the Marvelwood Pterodactyls once again for the trophy, the Cougars claimed victory in straight sets 8-0. Coach Feffer was very pleased with the team’s record and performance this season: “The boys were undefeated this season both in the HVAL and the non-league teams we played. We dominated the championship winning all 6 singles matches, giving up a total of only 4 games out of 52. In doubles, we did not lose a single game.” Congratulations to Boys Varsity Tennis for another great season!

After two disappointing losses to Millbrook and Holy Child to close out April, the girls lacrosse team entered May with determination to turn the tides in their favor. Unfortunately, wet weather early in the month led to several cancellations until the Cougars were back on the field facing off in back-to-back games against the Hamden Hall Hornets and the Millbrook Mustangs. The Storm King players fought hard against a strong Hamden Hall team, but were ultimately outplayed by the Hornets ending in a loss, 2-18. When they faced the Mustangs the following day, the Cougars’ determination didn’t waver and they succeeded in keeping the score close throughout the game, with Millbrook scoring a late point to take the win, 8-9. Coaches Beckham and Cervantes agreed that the team put in a great effort all season: “They really came together as a team and played 110% every second of every game. We’re very proud of them and the team should be proud. Now, we’re looking forward to next season and what’s to come.”

The SKS baseball team entered the month of May with an exciting win against Faith Christian Academy, hoping to carry their winning momentum through to their last games of the season. As with the other SKS teams, wet weather took its toll early in the month and the Cougars were on the diamond only once more against Greens Farms Academy, where they suffered a disappointing loss, 0-15, to the Dragons. Despite their defeat, the Cougars will move on to compete in the HVAL championship tournament on Saturday, May 20.

Following schedule changes and poor weather early in May and a disappointing loss to the Hornets of Hamden Hall, the Cougars continued to give it their all on the courts when their schedule continued on May 8th against the Oakwood Lions followed by Harvey’s JV team. The down time served the Cougars well, with strong serving and consistent play bringing them 4-3 and 5-1 wins. Two days later, the Cougars faced the Lions once again on the SKS courts, but they left the match with mixed results and a 3-4 loss.

Their determination to close out the season with a win prevailed at their final match against the Marvelwood Pterodactyls where the Cougars emerged victorious with a 4-3 score. Their winning momentum continued at the HVAL finals, where the Cougars won over the Oakwood Lions, 5-2, to take home the trophy. Coach Finn-Atkins and Coach Mowat are proud of the team’s progress this year: “We had some mixed results this season, but we are thrilled to end as the HVAL champions!”

Boys Volleyball

The boys volleyball team enjoyed a win against Montfort Academy in mid-April, followed by an important game across the net from EF Academy on May 2. According to Coach Cervantes, the team put in a valiant effort, but they were ultimately outplayed by a stronger EFA team. For their final game of the season, the Cougars traveled to Peekskill, New York, to face Downstate where they suffered a loss in straight sets, 0-3 to end their season. “As a new sport on the SKS roster, the team worked hard, improved their skills, and did a great job this year. Next year, we hope to sign up even more players to the boys volleyball team,” commented Coach Cervantes.

The Ultimate Frisbee team added more wins to their roster in May. The Cougars’ signature teamwork and great play were on full display when they faced NYMA for a 10-0 closeout and Frederick Gunn on their home field with a resounding win, 15-6. The Cougars ended their season hosting NYMA for yet another closeout victory, 12-0, over the Knights to end their season with an undefeated record. With their sights set on bringing home the HVAL championship trophy, the Cougars tossed against Oakwood in the final. “We won 13-11 in a hard fought game against the Lions that lasted nearly two hours,” explained Coach Fulton after the game. “It ended when Jaime K. ’25 made a great catch and then an excellent throw to Manny B. ’26, who scored the game-winning point, securing the HVAL championship for Storm King. We had another strong year. As the team’s coach for the second year, I am very proud of their accomplishments.”
