Storm King has added another new after-school club to its rich roster of extracurricular activities–the Club De Español, or, the Spanish Club. The club was formed by several students and Spanish teacher Angelica Centeno earlier this month. Their objective: to have fun while practicing the Spanish language and sharing elements of Latino culture with the entire school community. “Our club is not meant to be just a language club, or just for Spanish students,” explained Mrs. Centeno. “We want to persuade students from all over the School to join, learn about a new culture, and participate in fun activities that combine more than one learning discipline.”

The Spanish Club’s first event was a good example of Mrs. Centeno’s proposed interdisciplinary fun. For its grand opening, the club held a commemorative celebration of Cinco de Mayo during one sunny lunch period last week. To help them prepare, the Spanish Club students enlisted the help of another Storm King academic discipline–visual arts. Mr. Harnick and his eighth-grade art class were eager to step in and help them make piñatas filled with candy for the event. According to Mr. Harnick, it was a chance for his art students to learn about the tradition of piñatas, and to create art using pâpier-maché.

The opening was highlighted by music teacher Alva Nelson and Aiden Sweeney ’19 who played lively Mariachi music as onlookers gathered on Ledoux Terrace to watch students and faculty compete in a Jalapeño pepper-eating contest and break open the piñatas. As the students scrambled for candy and the peppers became hotter, the laughter got louder. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Spanish Club and the 8th-grade art class, the day was a great success and a lot of fun for all.
