On Thursday, November 30, Storm King’s student-athletes were recognized not only for their athletic successes but for their sportsmanlike play. Our teams have become accustomed to winning. All four finished their seasons with outstanding records again this year, and three brought home HVAL league trophies. But even more importantly, our players are setting a great example when it comes to sportsmanship displayed on and off the field.

Athletic Director Joseph Graziosi led the awards ceremony with a speech written by Headmaster Lamb that captured the spirit of the evening and of athletics at Storm King:

“Winning is always a great accomplishment in sports, but tonight, I want to talk about some of the best moments I witnessed throughout the season. Moments which take us a step beyond winning.

They occurred while in the midst of intense competition; when someone on the opposing team went down and was helped up by a Storm King player. They occurred during a pause in the game when one of our students complimented his or her rival about a nice play; while shaking hands at the end of a game when our team members looked their competition in the eye and truly thanked them for the effort they gave.

Sports at their best bring out the finest qualities in each of us, not only as athletes but more importantly, as human beings. The games we play are not just tests of our physical ability; they are tests of our character and knowledge that the person wearing another uniform is one of the reasons for our success.

The best moments I saw this season were when anyone who played or attended a game appreciated, supported, and respected the effort and play of everyone on the field.  I saw this often and I applaud all of you for this.”

Congratulations for the great season all of our JV and varsity athletes put in this fall. Many thanks go to all of the coaches, student-helpers, faculty, and staff who helped make the season a success. And a special thank you to all of the parents and students who came out to cheer on our athletes.
