Each spring, as the academic year winds down, teaching and learning at The Storm King School transforms into something immersive and experiential. Following final exams, Q-Term gives students and teachers the opportunity to step away from their regular schedules and embrace hands-on experiences that inspire creativity, build practical skills, and encourage exploration beyond the traditional classroom. For six days, classrooms gave way to art studios, hiking trails, historic landmarks, community organizations, unforgettable excursions, and more.
During Q-Term, creativity flourished in a variety of arts and design courses. In Performing Arts Intensive, students blended acting, music, and dance while preparing for a final performance. Aspiring filmmakers documented the Q-Term experience in Video Journalism, while students in Sewing & Garment Construction created original pieces from concept to completion. In A Deep Dive Into Art Making, students explored jewelry making, mural painting, and live model drawing, experimenting with new techniques and forms of creative expression. Introduction to Architecture challenged students to think about how buildings and spaces shape the way we live, while Crafting the Game combined storytelling, strategy, and design to develop original tabletop gaming experiences.
Deep Dive into Art
Adventure and exploration extended beyond campus throughout the week. Students in Destination Waterfall discovered some of the region’s most beautiful natural landscapes through hiking and exploration, while another group earned their Level I Kayaking Certification as they built confidence and skills on the water. Others immersed themselves in the rich cultural diversity of the region through The Hudson Valley & NYC Multicultural Immersion or explored one of America’s most historic cities in Exploring Philadelphia—The City of Brotherly Love.
Other students focused on communication, service, and preparing for the future. In Hearts & Hands: Building Bridges Through Community Service, they partnered with local organizations to make a meaningful impact. Public Speaking helped students become more confident presenters and communicators, while Books, Coffee, Culture encouraged thoughtful discussion through literature and shared experiences. Building Futures Through Sports introduced students to the many careers that support the sports industry, and juniors participating in Next Stop: College visited campuses and gained valuable insight into the college admissions process.
Performing Arts Intensive
Q-Term also encouraged students to explore history through fresh perspectives. Chinese Modern History examined the political and cultural transformation of one of the world’s most influential nations, while Historical D&D blended historical research with collaborative storytelling, allowing students to experience the past through creative role-playing and strategic thinking.

As in previous years, Q-Term 2026 once again demonstrated the power of experiential learning. Whether creating, exploring, serving, or discovering, students developed new skills, strengthened friendships, and gained experiences that extended far beyond the classroom. It was a memorable and inspiring way to conclude another successful school year and prepare students for the next one and beyond.
