Moving into December, our girls Class AA Prep basketball team played two successful scrimmages versus Ethical Culture Fieldston and Hackley School. According to Coach Tian Tang, “The team has shown a lot of progress defensively from our first to second scrimmage.”

The AA Cougars tipped off their competitive schedule hosting Greenwich Academy. “Overall, it was positive for us to have a big win, 56-19, for our home opener. It was also a good chance to pinpoint the areas where we need improvement,” commented Coach Tang.

Key performers were Marisa C. ’24 (20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists), Isabella S. ’24 (12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Imani P. ’26 (8 rebounds), Amber L. ’25 (10 rebounds), Elizabeth U. ‘26 (10 points, 2/3 from three), and Bella S. ‘25 (11 points, 3/7 from three).

“With such a young roster, the team is still in the process of creating their own culture and identity, and learning to adapt to new concepts we are putting forward,” continued Coach Tang. Next up, the girls prep team is on the road to face Hoosac.

At their first game of the season, the boys varsity basketball team traveled to Bridgeport, Connecticut to take on Capital Prep Harbor. According to Coach MacSwain, it proved to be a tough afternoon for the Cougars: “For a first game, it can only be described as intense. It was a back-and-forth battle between two very athletic teams up until the final buzzer, with Capital Prep coming out on top, 94-59.”

Key performers were Gabe D. ‘25 “who put in a tremendous effort to score tough baskets” while sharp shooter Josh C. ’24 scored several 3-pointers. Marquise S. ’25 and Isiah H. ’24 also contributed to the scoring, while playing tough defense.

Coach MacSwain and Assistant Coach Loungo were proud of the team’s performance and look forward to the rest of the season. “The team has a lot naturally-gifted athletes on the squad. Once they gel and they find their groove, the Cougars will be in great shape,” added SKS Athletic Director Cervantes.

The varsity boys will host multiple teams this weekend for the Storm King Tournament, gaining more important court time and continuing to hone their skills.

Storm King’s fencing and wrestling teams have also started their winter training with their competitive schedules beginning later in December. Go, Cougars!
