April has been a busy month for SKS Athletics with all six varsity teams at the height of their spring competitive seasons.

The girls tennis team began their competitive season at EF Academy on Friday, 4/8. In singles play, the Cougars tied 2-2, with wins by Brianna B. ’26 (8-3) and Alice L. ’22 (8-1). Doubles pair Taylor M. ’23 and Ana Lucia M. ’23 yielded a 3rd win after a tie-breaker (9-7), but the girls ultimately fell with a final score of 3-4 in the final set.

Hoping for a win in the next round of competition, the Cougars faced the Hoosac Owls on Wednesday, 4/13. Unfortunately, after a valiant effort, the girls were unable to produce a win in what proved to be a difficult afternoon and a 0-7 loss.

However, the tables turned serving against Oakwood Friend on Friday, 4/15 on the SKS courts. Brianna (10-3), Alice (10-3), Isabella C. ’23 (10-1), and Bijou S. ’24 (10-3) closed out their opponents in the singles round followed by doubles teams Brianna and Alice (10-0), Mary Y. ’22 and Linda L. ’23 (10-7), and Linna Y. ’24 and Charlotte T. ’25 (10-5), resulting in victory for the Cougars 7-0.

The winning advantage stayed with the team the following Monday, 4/25, when the Cougars traveled to Oakwood for a rematch against the Lions. Once again the Cougars dominated singles play with 4 wins out of 6. A 3rd win by doubles team Brianna and Alice ended the day with a solid win and a final score of 5-2 over the Lions.

Girls Tennis will play again on Sunday, 5/1, when they host the varsity and JV teams from Rocky Hill School on the Mountain.

The boys tennis team started their season when they faced Hoosac on Saturday, 4/2, in a tough match-up. A strong Owls team overpowered the Cougars in singles and doubles play, resulting in a 0-9 loss. However, the Cougars regained momentum versus EF Academy on Friday, 4/8. Coming out of singles play tied with 2 wins by Hugo L. ‘23 (5-8) and Diego M. ’25 (8-2), home advantage was with the Cougars’ doubles pairs who swept through 3 consecutive wins (8-1), (8-1), and (8-0) to take the day 5-2 overall.

Traveling to Oakwood Friends on Friday, 4/15, the Cougars line-up of Sagan, Diego, Tony L. ’22 Ishmael B. ’23, Ben L. ‘22, and Jan B. ’22, roared through both singles and doubles play to close out their opponent 9-0.

The Cougars hoped for another win when they hosted the Hoosac Owls on Thursday, 4/21, on the SKS courts. After a strong effort from each team member, Storm King suffered a disappointing loss, 3-6. In the singles round, two Cougars enjoyed wins-Ishmael (10-0) and Ben (8-2). The doubles team of Sagan and Tony also won their match (8-2).

The loss only served to motivate the boys when they hosted Oakwood Friends on Monday, 4/25 in a rescheduled match. Storm King’s line up of Hugo, Sagan, Diego, Tony, Ishmael, and Ben scorched the courts once again to close out their opponent with a 9-0 final score.

The Cougars will strive to keep their winning momentum going when they host Rocky Hill School on Sunday, 5/1.

In their first game of the season, SKS Baseball faced the Harvey School Cavaliers on Tuesday, 4/5 for a tough first match. Highlights included solid pitching by Seongjae L. ’24 and first-year outfielder Kayan M. ’23’s reel catch which ended the Harvey rally in the 2nd inning.

SKS played its first league game at Oakwood Friends School on Wednesday, 4/13. The Cougars came from behind to earn a hard-fought victory versus the Lions. Down six runs, Edward I. ’23 took to the mound in the 3rd inning quickly putting a stop to an Oakwood rally. Timely hits from Jordan S. ’26, Daniel B. ’22, Seongjae, and Michael H. ’22 later in the game resulted in a solid win, 22-14.

On Wednesday, 4/20, the Cougars hosted the Hoosac Owls at Christie Babcock Field. Unfortunately, home advantage didn’t help them maintain their winning momentum with Storm King losing a hard-fought game. The following Wednesday, 4/27, the Cougars were back on track when they hosted Oakwood, winning by a 10-run margin, 20-10. Edward collected his 2nd win on the mound finishing with 4 strikeouts and only one walk in 5 innings. Jack M. ’23 led the offensive effort with 3 hits and 4 runs scored. Michael also had 3 hits, and Daniel and SJ added two hits apiece.

Up next, the Cougars travel to Bridgeport, Connecticut on Saturday, 4/30,  for a non-league match up versus Capital Harbor Prep.

On Saturday, 4/2, the varsity girls lacrosse team played in their first competition of the season in Rye, New York when they faced School of the Holy Child. It was a difficult game for the Cougars, but Coach McMahon was proud of their progress as a team: “The SKS Girls came together with strong team bonding and learned many lessons of the game of lacrosse.  For half the team, in their first-ever lacrosse game, they quickly learned how to play their respective positions to best support their teammates. With very few fouls, they worked hard until the last whistle, never giving up.”  Highlights of the game included 12 saves by new goalie Nicole T. ‘24, whose positive attitude flowed over to many of her teammates.  Captains Carly N. ’22, Anora M. ’22, and Andy H. ’22 led the team with cooperation and enthusiasm, with  1 goal  by Carly.

Next up, the Cougars faced off against the Hoosac Owls on Wednesday, 4/13 in what proved to be another tough game in terms of score, but a win for team bonding and learning the game. Nicole made a number of key saves in goal, countered by 2 goals from Carly. Marissa C. ‘24 had a great day at her first time on midfield and doing the draw for the team while Anora kept the defense strong with her leadership on the field.

The following Wednesday, 4/20, the Cougars traveled to the Millbrook School hoping for a win. Nicole had 7 saves at the goal, with Marissa scoring 3 and Anora scoring 2,  but it wasn’t enough to beat the Mustangs, who won the game with a 5-9 score.

One week later, the SKS Girls played “solidly” against Hoosac again on Wednesday, 4/27, in a very physical contest, taking the lead during first half, but falling to a run of scores at the end of the match. “On a cold and very windy day the girls continued to show improvement in their individual and team skills, most of whom are playing lacrosse in their first season. Carly led the attack and scoring with 5 goals and another from rising star Marissa. The defense was rallied by Anora who continued to prove her grit and resolve, yet maintained a sense of sportsmanship and honor of the game. I was very proud of the team for standing their ground during the game and being the first team to stand on the line to wait for the others to shake hands after a game well fought,” commented Coach McMahon after the game.

Girls Lacrosse plays again on Wednesday, 5/4, when the Cougars will travel to Connecticut to face Greenwich Country Day School.

After several cancelations early in April, Boys Varsity Lacrosse traveled to Connecticut’s Salisbury School to face the Crimson Knights on Wednesday, 4/20. According to Coach Bennett, despite their 3-9 loss, the team “played with heart and passion. Boris T. ’25 had an amazing game in the goal (for the first time ever). I was an amazing thing to watch.”

The Cougars played again the following day, hosting the Hoosac Owls on Thursday, 4/21, on their home field. It was another tough fight and a disappointing loss for the boys who, according to their coach, “played hard until the final second and never gave up no matter what happened.”  Mikey M. ’22 scored SKS’ single goal in the 4th quarter to prevent a shut-out, with the final score in favor of the Owls.

To finish out the month, the Cougars will travel to Connecticut to face Marvelwood School on Saturday, 4/30.

The undefeated Ultimate team had their first competition on Tuesday, 4/19, hosting Oakwood Friends on the SKS field. The Cougars cruised to a 15-4 victory and had a lot of fun in the process according to Coach Fulton. The following day, Wednesday, 4/20, home advantage prevailed again with the Cougars comfortably beating their guests, the Darrow Ducks, 15-2. The fun continued on Monday, 4/25, when the team traveled to Oakwood gaining another resounding win 15-4, followed by a home win versus historic rival NYMA, 10-2, at a match cut short due to the cold and wind. “We’re undefeated so far, carried by the incredibly strong play of Lou H. ’22, RJ D. ’22, and Cedric Z. ’23, as well as great defense by Camilla S. ’22 and Anna N. ’22.”

Ultimate fun continues on Wednesday, 5/3, when the Cougars travel to face Darrow.
