Storm King Athletics is at the height of the fall season and the SKS Cougar teams have settled well into their competition schedules. It’s been a great month so far, with Boys Varsity Soccer enjoying a winning streak and the boys and girls cross country teams holding their second tournament on the Mountain this season.

October has been a great month for Boys Varsity Soccer. After a disappointing loss on the road to EF International, 2-1, earlier this month, the Cougars came out strong at Oakwood on Saturday, October 15. Taking control of the pitch from the get-go, Storm King earned a resounding win over the Lions, 5-0. According to Coach Bennett, “We dominated the run of play for a huge win against the Lions. It was all-around our best game yet with a score from 5 different players.”

It was even play until the last 3 minutes when Luciano scored the game winner. What. A. Game.”

Following a loss at Christian Heritage earlier in the month, the girls varsity soccer team trained hard leading up to their home game against Hoosac on Wednesday, October 12. Unfortunately, home advantage didn’t help the girls, who suffered a disappointing loss to the Owls, 1-4. Hoping for redemption on Saturday, October 15, the Cougars traveled to Harvey for another tough match. The final score didn’t reflect the team’s valiant efforts and Cougars fell to the Cavaliers 1-7.

However, the tables turned for Storm King when the girls emerged again on Wednesday, October 19, at Oakwood determined to win. Great play and constant pressure on the opposing goal resulted in a resounding and much-anticipated victory, 9-1, over the Lions. The Cougars hoped to continue their winning momentum when they traveled to Hoosac on Wednesday, October 26. The match was highlighted by strong efforts on the field and in the goal on both sides. Ultimately, the Owls prevailed with a 0-2 score. SKS’ Arianna L. ’24 was recognized as the Player of the Game by the Owls. Next up, the Cougars travel to Harvey for a Halloween match-up on October 31.

Through the month of October, SKS Junior Marisa C. ’24 has continued to lead the girls cross country runners, placing first at both the Storm King Challenge (22:43.8) and at NYMA with a similar time. Marisa and the other Storm King runners were hoping for more of the same when they traveled to Marvelwood on Wednesday, October 26. Unfortunately, it was an off day for Marisa who placed 50th with a time of 48:56.4. Two SKS runners placed in the top 25: Evangeline G. ’26 placed 19th at 30:21.6 and Joy L. ’23 placed 25th  at 30:57.8. Girls Cross Country will compete again on Wednesday, November 2 at Darrow for the HVAL Championship.

After a short break in competition, Boys Cross Country traveled to local rival NYMA on Wednesday, October 12, where four Storm King Cougars placed in the top 10 out of more than 50 runners. Leading the harriers were Edward I. ‘23 in 3rd place ( 17:53.3), Kayan M. ’23 in 4th (18:04.7), Vincent I. ‘24 in 8th (19:59.7), and Marquise S. ’25 in 9th (20:05.5).

One week later, the Cougars hosted their second tournament of the season on the Mountain–the SKS Challenge. Once again, the harriers took charge of their home course, placing third overall with a score of 61. Edward led the Storm King team coming in 5th at 18:44.3, followed by Kayan placing 7th at 18:55.2 and Vincent placing 15th at 20:48.0.

Intent on continuing their winning steak, the harriers traveled to Marvelwood on Wednesday, October 26 to race against the Pterodactyls. Facing tough competition, one runner from the Cougar team finished in the top 10. Vincent succeeded in placing 5th out of 13 runners with a time of 19:00.6. Now, the harriers have their sights set on winning the HVAL championship title when they travel to Darrow on Wednesday, November 2.

The girls varsity volleyball team has worked hard this month both on and off the court. On Saturday, October 8, the Cougars traveled to Millbrook School to face the Mustangs, who came out strong with consistent serving to take the first set. In set 2, the Cougars fired back with several aces in a row, but the Mustangs pulled together and kept their momentum going resulting in a 0-3 loss for the Cougars. “We played very well against this high ranking team. We controlled the ball and implemented many of our current team strategies where we could,” explained Coach Cervantes after the game.

Next, the Cougars were on the road Saturday, October 15, to face EF International. It was another tough game for the Cougars who fought hard but came home with a loss, 3-1. However, strong and consistent serving and responsive play that sent their opponents serves back into the other court, turned the tables for the girls on Wednesday, October 19, when they brought home a win versus the Hoosac Owls, 3-0.

The following weekend, the girls had their sights set on redemption when they hosted Faith Christian Academy on Wednesday, October 26. Unfortunately, in another challenging game, the Cougars fell to FCA 0-3.

To close out October, the Cougars will travel to Kingswood Oxford to play against the Marie Philips School.
