With their first month of games and practices behind them, the Storm King Cougars have entered October–the high season for competition. Four of our fall teams enjoyed their first games of the month this week, and all SKS Cougars continue to display hard work, sportsmanship, and determination as their seasons progress.

Following their 2nd place standing at the Storm King Invitational to close out September, the Cougars have been training consistently with Coach Finn-Atkins while taking advantage of a few off days from competition. Moving into October, their efforts paid off at the Darrow Invitational where Storm King captured 1st place out of 5 competing schools. Storm King had 3 runners place in the top 10. Senior Joshua C. ’24 placed 1st overall with a time of 21:53, followed by Liam M. ’27 in 6th at 23:29, and Eric W. ’27 finishing 8th overall at 24:05.

The girls cross country team also traveled to the Darrow Invitational for their first meet in October where Storm King ran yet another solid race placing 2nd overall out of 5 schools. Senior Marisa C. ’24 led the Cougar pack finishing 1st overall with a time of 24:31. Two more SKS runners also placed in the Top 10: Elizabeth U. ’26 finished 6th overall at 31:44, and Eva G. ’26 was the 10th runner to cross the finish line at 33:38.

After a resounding win over the Oakwood Lions in late September, the boys varsity soccer team had their sights set on another victory when they hosted Harvey for their first October match. Both teams gave it their all in what was a tough game for both sides. Mohanad A. ’25 scored a single goal assisted by Luciano C. ’25 for the Cougars, who ultimately fell 1-2 to the Cavaliers after a strong effort.

Season Record: 3 W – 2 L

Their recent victory over Wooster at the end of September set the girls varsity volleyball team up for a strong start to October competition. Traveling to Marvelwood to face the Pterodactyls, the Cougars displayed excellent teamwork and communication on the court for another win in straight sets (3-0) over their opponent. “The team is coming together really well. Each player has settled into their position while still working on all of the skills it takes to play,” commented Coach Cervantes. “Hitters are becoming stronger, smarter. Passers are letting less fall. And young players are getting more accustomed to the way the game is played at a high level. The next few weeks of competition should be really good for the program’s development.”
