The winter athletic season is now well underway and SKS Cougar Basketball is heating up the courts both on the road and at home.

The boys varsity basketball team hosted 3-day Storm King Tournament following their season opener loss to Capital Prep Harbor earlier this month. The Cougars fared well throughout the tournament sporting a 58-52 win on the opening day versus Wooster. On Day 2, SKS lost some momentum, falling to St. Thomas More, 58-62, in a close game. The Cougars bounced back on Sunday to gain a second win, 68-60, over Redemption Christian, finishing the tournament in a 3-way tie (2-1) along with Wooster, St. Thomas More, and Redemption Christian. The All Tournament Award honors went to Storm King’s Josh Cook ’24.

The following day, the Cougars traveled to Hamden Hall to face the Hornets. It was a tough game for the Cougars who gained some momentum early in the game but were overpowered by a strong Hamden Hall team. According to Coach Luongo, “This year’s team is continuing to grow and develop. We had a lot of great individual and team moments across the 3-day tournament, and we look forward to continuing our development as the season progresses.”

After a strong start to December, the girls prep basketball team finished on the downside of a 71-48 score when they faced Hoosac on the road. “We started the first quarter down 18-6, and were able to keep the game down 10 points through 3 quarters, then lost it at the end,” said Coach Tian Tang. “Our team’s youth and inexperience showed in this game versus an experienced, talented squad from Hoosac. We weren’t able to execute the necessary pressure on both sides of the ball.”

Despite the setback, Coach Tang felt it was a “good learning experience for a young team that is currently starting 3 sophomores. It allowed us to pinpoint the areas we need to improve on both individually and collectively as a team.”

Notable performers were Elizabeth U. ’26 scoring 11 points, Bella S. ’24 with 10 points, Marisa C. ’24 with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and Imani P. ’26 with 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Despite losing in their debut match against Wooster School, the girls varsity team displayed impressive participation and positivity. Their resilience and eagerness to learn shone throughout the contest, making for an excellent start to the season and a promising future for this roster of young novice players.
