A group of Storm King art students had high expectations and lofty goals on Friday, November 9, when they traveled to The Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home in Hyde Park, New York to attend Hudson Valley Portfolio Day 2018. The event, presented by The Art Effect (formerly the Art Institute – Mill Street Loft), gives area high school students the opportunity to meet with college representatives from some of the most prestigious art schools in the nation. During the course of the event, the students can also have their portfolios reviewed and discuss art-based career options with these same schools.

SKS Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair John Carruthers and art instructor Megan Liggett accompanied the students on the trip and were very pleased with the outcome. “The event is important for all students who are interested in attending art school and pursuing a career in the arts. Each student must prepare a portfolio containing up to 20 examples of their work. For younger students, the event is great practice, not only for putting a portfolio together but for learning how to explain their work and respond to critiques and suggestions. For juniors and seniors, they can actually forge connections with renowned schools that will benefit them during the application process. The lines were long at most of the college tables, but our students waited patiently to meet with the schools of their choice. It was a great experience for all of them,” explained Ms. Liggett following the trip.
