The Storm King School Model UN Team traveled to our nation’s capital recently to participate in the 61st North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) Conference. The conference, organized by the Georgetown International Relations Association (GIRA) and staffed by over 250 Georgetown University students, is attended by over 3,300 high school delegates annually and stands as the largest student-run Model United Nations conference in the world. The event was held at the Washington Hilton hotel from February 15-18, 2024.

This year, the event took place with the theme of ‘Commit to More,’ offering 42 general assemblies and committees including a model SCOTUS, Press Corps, International Court of Justice, and many others. SKS delegates included Christine S. ’24, Yiting L. ’24, Vincent I. ’24, Nyla A. ’25, Emma L. ’25, Duong N. ’25, Tianci Z. ’25, Daniel Z. ’25, Shaheer A. ’26, Emily K. ’26, Hongwei C. ’26, Theodore B. ’26, and Liam M. ’27.

“I represented France along in the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM),” explained Emily. Our committee dealt with the Blue Economy. We worked on a resolution to implement sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources, new technology to prevent pollution, funding for these solutions, and end overfishing. This was my third conference and it was very exciting because I was able to get involved and be active in my committee which made it a lot of fun!”

While in Washington, D.C., the students also had the chance to visit the National Mall and see historical monuments including the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and the Washington Monument among others.

“With each conference we attend, I continue to be impressed with the level of work done by our delegates and enjoy seeing their skills in persuading, influencing, and debating as they continue to develop.” According to Mr. Gillett, NAIMUN XLI was excellent practice for the SKS team, who are now getting ready for the Model UN Conference at Concord Academy (CAMUN) in late March.
