Athletic games were canceled due to inclement weather this weekend, but several SKS teams enjoyed exciting play before the snow set in. On Wednesday, January 15, the SKS varsity bowling team traveled to Poughkeepsie, NY, to play their first games of the season versus two longstanding rivals, NYMA and Faith Christian Academy. Despite falling against NYMA in the first game 111-102, Storm King rallied to defeat FCA in the second game with a score of 96-57.

According to Coach Carolyn Mendlewski, every player contributed to the team’s performance. “During the first round against NYMA, Jan Bagijn (’22) earned a strike in the second frame and Kieran Maddox (’20) earned a spare in the third frame. Veteran Igor Klimtsov (’20) also earned a spare in the fourth frame, and Conall Sweeney (’20) earned another spare in the final frame. Ultimately, NYMA won the first round 111 to 102,” explained Coach Mendlewski. “In the second round, however, SKS came back strong to defeat their opponent 128 to 75. Tri “Tony” Le (’22) scored a strike in the first frame, Kieran scored a strike in the third frame, and Igor followed with a spare in the fourth and a strike in the ninth. During the third round, Kieran and Igor scored strikes in the eighth and ninth frames, but it wasn’t enough to defeat NYMA. The Cougars ultimately lost by one pin,” she continued.

“During our second match against FCA, the Storm King team rallied to defeat them in the third round 96 to 57. Conall earned a spare in the fourth frame, followed by Igor’s strike in the fifth frame. Jan Steiner (’21) scored a spare in the seventh frame, and Conall earned a strike in the seventh while Igor finished with a spare in the tenth. During the second round, FCA had a temporary advantage, winning 109 to 96, but SKS returned strong in the third round winning 96 to 57. In the third round, Conall scored a strike in the fourth frame, and Kieran Maddox bowled a spare in the eighth frame,” explained Coach Mendlewski.

The SKS wrestlers also had a winning week before the winter weather arrived. On Wednesday, January 15, they traveled to face two league opponents at the Woodhall School in Bethlehem, CT. There, they earned two consecutive wins, the first versus NYMA in the first round with a score of 111 to 102, and the second versus Woodhall with a final score tied at 36-36, where SKS won on the criteria of the fewest forfeits. Coach Tim Gillett reports that wrestlers who earned pins included Nick Avaras (’23), Wonui “Won” Kim (’21), Noah Mendlewski (’20), Yu Sung “Michael” Hong (’22), and Warren Stone (’23). Next up, the wrestlers will face Hamden Hall Country Day School away on Wednesday, January 22.

The boys varsity basketball team also continued their winning momentum on Wednesday the 15th, defeating Redemption Christian Academy 58-52. With their season record standing at 8 wins and 1 loss, the Cougars will face Greens Farms Academy on their home court on Wednesday, January 22.
