Congratulations to the girls varsity volleyball team who captured the HVAL Championship title for the second year in a row yesterday versus second seed Faith Christian Academy with a score of 3-0. In all three games, the Cougars racked up the points with their signature combination of strong serving by sophomores Milana Shigapova and Zoe Buddie, and junior Sude Bakal, consistent set-ups, and formidable play at the net by Zoe, senior Seina Kusunoki, and Captain Jojo Gong.  With the win, Girls Volleyball joins the boys and girls cross country teams in SKS’ 2019 line-up of champions and will move on to play in the NEPSAC tournament games scheduled next week.

Next in line for a season trophy is the boys varsity soccer team who defeated Darrow School this week in their HVAL playoff semi-final match. The win set the boys up for a showdown with Marvelwood on Saturday at 2:00 pm here on the Mountain.  For the fifth straight season, Storm King and Marvelwood will meet in the finals, with Storm King winning three of the previous four matches. The Cougars are currently on a 47-match winning streak in the conference dating back to the 2015 final where SKS lost to Marvelwood in double overtime.  During the regular season, the two teams have met twice with Storm King winning both very close matches.  “I hope everyone will make an effort to dress warm and come out and support the boys on Saturday,” said Coach Joseph Graziosi.

Kudos also go out to the girls varsity soccer team who faced Marvelwood in this week’s semifinal game. The girls played tirelessly through a grueling, 80-minute tie game, ultimately falling in overtime penalty kicks. Freshman Elena Centeno scored SKS’ only goal in the first two minutes of the match with Marvelwood scoring late in the second half to tie the game 1-1. After playing through two intense 5-minute “golden goal” overtime rounds, SKS’ defense, led by senior goalkeeper Naunet Leonhardes-Barboza, fought off any shots on the goal which led to the game being decided with a penalty shootout.  After a long match, SKS’ first two veteran players missed their shots, but junior Yu Osaki and senior Sam McCullough came through with one goal each. Coach Kristen Barbosa was very proud of the team despite the final result. “In the end, Marvelwood was able to find the back of the net a few more times than SKS. Our team is young and ready to work hard in the off-season to prepare for a great season next fall,” she explained.
