At The Storm King School, the beginning of a new school year is an opportunity to welcome new students, celebrate our global community, and look ahead to the experiences that make a Storm King education unique. This year, 179 students representing 23 countries are joining the Storm King community, bringing with them a wide range of cultures, perspectives, and experiences.
The week began with student arrivals, move-in, and registration for new international students. On registration day, families spent the morning checking in, meeting with the Academic Office to finalize class schedules, and signing up for fall athletic teams and activities. The day continued with opportunities to explore campus, including campus tours and hard-hat tours of the new Fischer Academic Center, currently under construction.
Families also gathered for a Parent and Guardian Welcome presentation and reception, where they had the opportunity to meet Storm King’s new Head of School, Lisa Shambaugh and connect with members of the school community. The day concluded with a formal dinner in the dining hall, giving new students and their families an opportunity to share a meal and begin getting to know one another.
A Week of Discovery and Adventure
For Storm King’s new international students, arrival week is about more than getting settled into a dorm room. It is an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Storm King community, build new friendships, and learn more about American life and culture.
Throughout the week, students have taken part in dorm activities, shopping trips, hiking, on-campus activities, and plenty of opportunities for fun and connection. The week culminates with an exciting trip to Washington, D.C., where students will experience some of the history, culture, and landmarks of the nation’s capital. Before returning to New York and Storm King, students will make a final stop for a day of rides, fun, and excitement at Six Flags Amusement Park.
Looking Ahead to a New School Year
While new international students are already getting settled and making connections, excitement is building for the return of the rest of the Storm King community. Returning boarding students and day students will arrive on campus for all-school registration and orientation in the coming days. Seniors will also take part in the annual Senior Retreat, an important opportunity for the Class of 2027 to come together and begin their final year at Storm King with a strong sense of community and purpose. Finally, classrooms, art studios, athletic fields, and gathering spaces across campus will come alive as the first day of classes officially begins.
A new school year always brings new opportunities, new friendships, new challenges, and many memories waiting to be made. From our new international students to returning students and their families, Storm King is thrilled to welcome everyone back for another exciting year.
