As the winter athletic season winds to a close, the Storm King Wrestlers have continued to top the news with 8th grader Elijah Graziosi and senior Noah Mendlewski participating in the National Prep Championships held at Lehigh University on Friday, February 21. Earlier in the month, the two boys competed successfully in the New York State Prep Qualifier where Noah finished in 4th place by defeating his opponent from Peddie School and Elijah winning the NY State Tournament in the 101-pound weight class.

The wrestling team clinched their 7th HVAL Championship title in 9 years on Wednesday, February 19, when the Cougars hosted NYMA, Marvelwood, and Woodhall for the Finals. The Storm King wrestlers closed their season undefeated in the conference with a record of 8-1. Most recently, the team traveled to Massachusetts for the Melee on the March, a Futures (JV) Tournament held on Sunday, February 23, at the Governor’s Academy. Eight of the 12 SKS wrestlers who participated won at least 1 match and freshman Warren Stone ran through his weight class with 3 straight wins to claim 1st place. According to Coach Gillett, the future looks bright for SKS wrestling as 16 out of the 19 wrestlers on this year’s roster are underclassmen planning on wrestling next year.

 

 

Hoop action heated up the SKS gym during the month of February with the boys varsity basketball team hosting MacDuffie School, Hoosac, and Kent’s Hill School at the SKS Mid-Winter Invitational. On Saturday, February 15, the Cougars scored a decisive victory over Kent’s Hill School 85-62, bringing them to the Final game versus MacDuffie on Sunday, February 16.  After non-stop action and feverish play, MacDuffie succeeded in edging out the Cougars by 2 points in the Final, 63-61. SKS’ Rashad Ramserran was named All-Tournament high scorer with a combined 42 points, including 27 points in the Final.

The following weekend, the team was on the road in New England to face St. Thomas Moore Academy in Oakdale, Connecticut then on to Barrington, Rhode Island versus Saint Andrew’s School. The weekend brought home mixed results with the Cougars falling 47-64 to St. Thomas Moore and rallying to victory over Saint Andrews’s, 67-49. Sophomore Josiah Diaz, who is from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, scored 21 points on Sunday in front of family and friends.

Most recently the Cougars enjoyed a win on their home court versus Hoosac on Wednesday, February 26. After a feverish tempo and neck-and-neck scoring throughout the game, Storm King succeeded in edging out their rival by 1 point with 34 seconds on the clock at a final score of 53-52. The boys currently stand with a 17-5 record as they prepare to compete in the NEPSAC quarterfinals the first week of spring break.

 

 

The girls varsity basketball team is getting ready to put a successful winter season behind them as they advance to the HVAL Championship at Darrow School in Thursday, February 27. The girls overcame Poughkeepsie Day School 35-31 in the exciting semifinal game on February 26 following a tough game against a strong opponent. The girls rallied for the win following two previous losses to King School, 43-19, on February 12 and Darrow, 70-46, on February 22, and several cancellations early in the month.

As a result of their efforts and tenacity, the girls stand with a 6-5 record as they advance to the HVAL Championship Finals for the 2nd time in 3 years.

The SKS bowling team also finished their season on a positive note, winning their final match against NYMA on Thursday, February 20. NYMA won the first match 129 to 80, but SKS returned with a win in the second round 118 to 92. In the third round, SKS succeeded in defeating NYMA and winning the final match with a strike by senior Igor Klimtsov in the 9th frame and 2 strikes by senior Conall Sweeney in the 10th frame. Overall, SKS won 5 games and NYMA won 1 game for the season.
