As the winter chill fades and the days grow longer, Storm King’s spring athletic teams are gearing up for an action-packed season ahead with enthusiasm and determination. Since their return from Spring Break, our Cougar athletes have been busy training for their first competitions. To close out the month of March, the SKS Fencers hosted local rival, Northern Academy, and the girls’ lacrosse team faced off against Greenwich Academy for the first game day of the season.

In the SKS fencing room, ten SKS Cougars welcomed three fencers from Northern Academy on March 27 for a series of engaging bouts that showcased the skills and dedication of the SKS team. Despite the uneven numbers, our fencers were able to hone their abilities and gain confidence on the piste. The final rankings were determined through a tally of wins, losses, and touches scored and received. Coach Belcher was impressed with his team’s performance: “Each fencer demonstrated their skills and determination, with experienced fencers like Daniel Z. ’25 and Stephen Y. ’26 holding their own and newcomers like Conghan W. ’27 and Charlie M. ’28 making notable strides since joining the team.”

For their first competition of the season, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team was on the road to Greenwich Academy where they displayed resilience and determination on the pitch, despite a 1-6 loss. Their coaches commended the team’s performance, noting their defensive strength and their impressive adaptation of skills from practice to competition. “The team did an outstanding job in their first game. With only a handful of returning and experienced players, it was truly impressive to see how well they had each picked up on different skill sets from practice and translated them to game-time effectively,” commented Coach Cervantes. “We were defensive dynamos, keeping the Greenwich Dragons at bay. The lone goal by Juliana D. ’27 in the second quarter showcased the team’s potential and sets a promising tone for the remainder of the season.”

Looking ahead, SKS anticipates an intense and exciting spring sports season, with six additional teams diligently practicing for their upcoming competitions in April. As the Cougars continue to refine their skills and build camaraderie, the school community stands ready to support them every step of the way!
