With spring right around the corner, the new athletic season is off to a great start for the Storm King School Cougars. During the first week of April, our girls lacrosse, baseball, and ultimate frisbee teams enjoyed their first games of the season, while the new boys volleyball team had their first match at the end of March.

The girls lacrosse team began their competitive season by traveling to Connecticut’s Greenwich Academy on Wednesday, April 5, to face the Gators. According to Coach Cervantes, the Cougars played an excellent first game despite their loss, 1-7, to the Gators. “Over half of our team this year has never played before, but if you were watching the game, you would have no idea. Our players followed the rules and handled themselves very well on the field. Nicole T. ’24 had more than 6 saves during the game, while Juliana D. ’27 and Marisa C. ’23 did a great job running up and down the field and playing both offense and defense.”

Next up, the Cougars will host the Kent School JV team on Wednesday, April 12, then travel to face off against Harvey on Friday, April 14.

In their first game of the season, SKS Baseball traveled to Katonah, New York, to face the Harvey School Cavaliers on Wednesday, April 5. Cool temperatures and blustery conditions were waiting for the SKS players at tough first match. Despite their loss, 0-10, the Cougars gained valuable field experience and teamwork. “SJ L. ’24 struck out three and gave up only one earned run in two innings. After pursing across a run in the first inning, Harvey scored four unearned runs in the 2nd and another four runs in the 3rd to take a 0-9 advantage. SKS hitters managed only four base runners and no hits against the back-to-back Housatonic Valley League champs. Edward I. ’23 and Logan K. ’27 combined to give up only one run in the 4th, but after SJ reached on an error and Alex K. ’24 walked, the Cougar bats were silenced once again in the 5th frame and the game ended in a win for the Cavaliers,” explained Coach Gillett.

Now the Cougars have their sights set on their next game at Capital Harbor Prep on Friday, April 7.

Our 2022 HVAL champion Ultimate Frisbee team traveled to Oakwood Friends in Poughkeepsie, New York, for their first game of the season on Wednesday, April 5. According to Coach Fulton, the Cougars gained a hard-fought win against the Lions with a score of 15-10. “Several of our players, namely Michael S. ’23, Jaime K. ’25, and Cedric Z. ’23, made huge contributions to our team’s victory,” he explained.

The Ultimate team hopes to continue their winning momentum at their next game at the Frederick Gunn School on Saturday, April 8.

The boys volleyball team has been practicing hard since Spring Break and has high hopes for the spring season. This new team on the SKS roster traveled to the Montfort Academy in Mt. Vernon, New York, for their inaugural game on Monday, March 27, where they enjoyed a win in straight sets, 3-0 over the Knights. “Going into our first match, there were a lot of nerves,” Coach Cervantes explained. “Each of the boys really picked up their attention to detail and had a blast playing the game against a different opponent. The team will continue to learn and grow in their understanding of the game and strategy. Setters Ren T. ’26 and Felipe M. ’24 did an outstanding job controlling the floor, building up their teammates, and making great offensive decisions.”

For their next game, the Cougars will travel to EF Academy on Wednesday, April 12.
