The Storm King Wrestlers continued to top the news this week with 8th grader Elijah Graziosi and senior Noah Mendlewski participating in the National Prep Championships held at Lehigh University on Friday, February 21, and the team participating in the Melee on the March, a Futures (JV) Tournament at the Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Massachusetts on Sunday, February 23. There were approximately 15 schools participating from 5 states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Storm King was the lone representative from New York. Eight of the 12 SKS wrestlers who participated won at least 1 match and freshman Warren Stone ran through his weight class with 3 straight wins to claim 1st place. According to Coach Gillett, the future looks bright for SKS wrestling as 16 out of the 19 wrestlers on this year’s roster are underclassmen who plan to wrestle next year.

The boys varsity basketball team was on the road in New England this weekend bringing home mixed results. On Saturday, the boys fell to St. Thomas Moore Academy in Oakdale, Connecticut with a score of 47-64 but rallied to bring home a win from Barrington, Rhode Island versus Saint Andrew’s School on Sunday, 67-49. Sophomore Josiah Diaz, who is from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, scored 21 points on Sunday in front of family and friends. Up next is Senior Day on Wednesday, February 26, when the team will play Hoosac at 2:00 pm in the gym. The boys currently stand with 16 wins and 5 losses as their season winds to a close.

The girls varsity basketball team played their final home game of the season on Saturday versus Darrow School. Despite the efforts of freshman forward Elena Centeno and senior forward Ut Gong, the Ducks succeeded in overcoming the Cougars 70-46 despite their home advantage. The girls now stand with a 5-5 record as they prepare to face Poughkeepsie Day on Wednesday, February 26.

The SKS bowling team continued their winning streak at their final match against NYMA on Thursday, February 20. NYMA won the first match 129 to 80, but SKS returned with a win in the second round 118 to 92. In the third round, SKS succeeded in defeating NYMA and winning the final match with a strike by senior Igor Klimtsov in the 9th frame and 2 strikes by senior Conall Sweeney in the 10th frame. Overall, SKS won 5 games and NYMA won 1 game for the season.
