The Storm King School Student Art Show is back at 2 Alice’s Coffee Lounge in Newburgh, New York! The show features outstanding works by our talented AP Studio Art, Advanced Studio Art, and Digital Design students. At the show’s recent opening, the venue was bustling with faculty, parents, and students who were eager to view the art while they shared coffee and conversation with the student artists. The evening was also highlighted with live music by some of our music and voice students.

Senior Ziqi L. ’23 had several outstanding self-portraits on display including her colorful Art Nouveau Self Portrait–a mix of watercolor and collage on paper. “I wanted to combine elements of my Chinese heritage with a more modern style. In the portrait, I painted myself wearing a traditional costume and used various paper cutouts to create the flowers and motifs that surround me,” she explained.

Other engaging works included a depiction of Medusa by junior Aitana G. ’24. “In my art, I chose to focus on female figures that have been shown in a negative light throughout history,” explained Aitana. “Medusa’s raised arms and the flowing snakes as her hair portray her as being free and happy in a more positive way.”  In the popular Digital Art category, senior Laura H. ’23 created several night scenes featuring detailed, hand-drawn images of skeletons as the main subjects in place of the human form. “I became intrigued by the skeletons, so I decided to use them in my art. They are all hand-drawn. The starry skies and night effects were added digitally using ProCreate to give them a dream-like quality,” explained Laura.

Visual Arts Department Chair John Carruthers was very impressed with the level of work his students produced: “We are happy to be back at 2 Alices Newburgh this year. This venue gives us a lot more space to exhibit even more of the students’ art.  I encourage everyone to visit the show and support them. The exhibition will run through the end of April, so don’t miss it.”
