Leading up to Arts Weekend, student artists at The Storm King School had the chance to showcase their work at 2 Alice’s Coffee Lounge in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Attendees, including supporters from SKS, gathered there for the show’s opening recently to enjoy coffee, treats, and engaging discussions around the exhibited art.

The display featured pieces from SKS’ AP Studio Art, Advanced Studio Art, Photography, and Digital Design classes. After a week on display at 2 Alice’s, the artwork returned to campus to be judged at the SKS Student Art Show in Ogden Hall.

Head of School Jonathan Lamb and his wife, Toni Scherrer, were among the first guests to arrive at the opening and congratulate the students on their works. “We are very impressed with the caliber of work our students produced this year,” they commented.

One standout piece, “Uncaged Woman,” an intense acrylic on wood painting by senior Aitaina G. ’24, adopted vibrant colors and flowers associated with freedom and spring. “I’m drawn to this style and I like working with acrylic paint to achieve the brightest colors,” explained Aitaina.

Junior Minchae K. ’25 also chose acrylic on wood to paint a self-portrait that depicts her heritage, incorporating lively colors and elements like cherry blossoms that stand out against a backdrop of grey architecture.

“Great Gatsby,” another acrylic on wood by sophomore Jiann L. ’26 inspired by the famous scene from the film where Leonardo DeCaprio raises his glass also got a lot of attention. “The image has appeared in so many memes on social media. I wanted to add a woman’s face that is reflected in the glass,” she explained.

John Carruthers, Chair of the Visual Arts Department, expressed his delight with both the art and the turnout at the opening, which drew SKS students, parents, and patrons of 2 Alice’s: “It was a great way to lead into Arts Weekend where all of the artwork will come back to campus and be put on display in Ogden Hall. We have our judges secured and the winners will be announced at the Student Art Show here on campus. I encourage everyone to stop by and view all of this year’s amazing art,” he commented.
