Boys Varsity Basketball

Since the start of Winter Break, Boys Varsity Basketball has been turning up the heat right into the heart of January. At the Kingswood-Oxford Tournament in mid-December, the Storm King Cougars captured 3rd place out of 7 teams. SKS was asked to play two games in one day due to a last-minute pull-out by another team. According to their coaches, the Cougars played an excellent 1st game in the morning versus Hopkins but could not keep up the momentum in the evening against Westminster. On Day 3, Storm King rebounded strongly against Hyde, playing one of the team’s best games of the season so far.

Kingswood-Oxford Tournament Results:
1st Team All-Tournament: Chris S. ’22
2/16 Storm King vs. Hopkins   W 79-47
12/16 Storm King vs. Westminster   L 58-64
12/17 Storm King vs. Hyde School   W 64-52

Following the holiday and several postponements, the Boys Varsity Basketball team was back on the court Wednesday, 1/19, at Greens Farms Academy. The Cougars worked hard, achieving an overtime win 84-81 over the Dragons. Tyson C. ’24 led Storm King in scoring with 33 points, followed by Josh C. ’24, who scored 18 points. Tri-captain Lou H. ’22 made two clutch free-throws to help ice the game while the team made one final defensive stand to win.

Tuesday, 1/25, saw the boys return to their home court to host Springfield Commonwealth Academy. The winning Cougar momentum continued with Storm King coming out on top 79-74 over the Tornadoes thanks to 23 team assists, 50% (12-24) of which were from a 3-point range.

Next up, Boys Varsity Basketball will travel to Connecticut’s Capital Prep Harbor School on Saturday, 1/29, followed by a home game versus historic rival NYMA on Monday, 1/31, to close out the month.

Girls Varsity Basketball

Girls Varsity Basketball also cruised into the Winter Break, traveling to Nobles and Greenough School for the Nickerson Classic Tournament.

On Day 1, Storm King was matched against the heavily-favored Tabor Academy team. The Cougars played evenly with Tabor in the first half trailing only 6 points. However, the Cougars went cold in the second half, and Tabor Academy pulled away for the win. Day 2 saw SKS battling Tilton School in a Class AA matchup that featured a talented Tilton team with several Division 1 prospects. The Cougars played very well in the first half but, once again, could not find the hoop in the second half, resulting in a loss. Coach Miller commented, “We had great looks the entire game, but we just could not hit shots.”

In the final game of the Nickerson Classic, Storm King fell to New Hampton School. The team saw great play from seniors Skyla N. ’22 and Madison C. ’22, but New Hampton’s hot 3-point shooting led by Mia M. proved to be too much for the Cougars.

Nickerson Classic Tournament Results:
12/17     Storm King vs. Tabor Academy   L 58-32
12/18     Storm King vs. Tilton School   L 63- 34
12/19     Storm King vs. New Hampton School   L 55-41

Fast-forward to January, and the Girls JV Basketball team was back in action on Wednesday, 1/19, hosting Connecticut’s Sacred Heart Greenwich on their home court. Despite a loss, the girls enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to play together as a team. Their coaches had this to say: “Everybody worked very well together in zone defense and it was nice to see all the fundamentals we have been working on in practice come together. However, there was a big experience discrepancy with other team and the JV Cougars will have to work on being more aggressive.”

After several postponements, Girls Varsity Basketball was back on the court Wednesday, 1/26, when they traveled to Hoosac School in Hoosick, New York. Despite the pause, their strong teamwork continued throughout the game, but the Cougars ultimately fell to the Owls 54 – 66 after a strong effort.

Up and coming, Girls Varsity Basketball is scheduled to host Kent School on Saturday, 1/29, at 2 PM in the SKS gym.
