The Storm King School Builder’s Club is a popular extracurricular club for young artists who meet after school each winter in search of their next inspiration. Their mission: learn to create an outdoor art installation worthy of public display and have fun while doing it.
Their creations are initially erected on campus and later travel to make their debut at the annual Collaborative Concepts Exhibition the following fall. This year’s exhibition is being held at the Tilly Foster Farm in Brewster, New York through Octber 27th and features the work of 35 area sculptors and artists including SKS.
Storm King’s current sculpture is called “Life’s Little Ups and Downs.” According to the students who created it, the piece was designed to represent the back and forth; the Yin-yang of life.
Recently, Mr. Carruthers took a group of students, including returning Builder’s Club sculptors Joya Y. ’26 and Coco P. ’25, to tour the Tilly Farms exhibition and see their work in action: “Coco and Joya were very involved last year with the conceptualization of the piece. Both students were very happy to see the art erected near the works of other Hudson Valley artists. It was also great for them to see the positive reactions of their friends and others who were touring the exhibition.”
“It was so exciting to see our artwork outside in such a beautiful place,” commented Joya and Coco. It was a lot of work and cooperation to build the sculpture, and it was fun to visit it again after time has past.” “Life’s Little Ups and Downs” will remain on display at Tilly Farms lasts through October 27, 2024 before it finds its place back on the Storm King School campus.
