Now in its fifth year, Storm King’s fashion design class continues to set the bar high for creative students interested in an introduction to the fashion industry. This fall, 12 young designers, some who were learning to sew for the first time, were tasked with creating a series of looks that reflected their own personal styles. According to their teacher, Ms. Liggett, the students went above and beyond and were more than ready to celebrate their accomplishments at the School’s fifth annual fashion show. The event, called ‘Riot on the Runway,’ took place on the evening of Thursday, February 9, 2023, in the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre.
To kick off the show, Ms. Liggett introduced the designers: Aiping “Charlotte” J. ’23, Laura H. ‘23, Deborah C. ‘24, Yiting “Stephanie” L. ’24, Grace R. ‘25, Patrick F. ’25, Emma L. ’25, Rebecca V. ’24, Rory R. ’24, Uta F. ’25, Taseri B. ’25, and Seven C. ’25.
In preparation for the show, each student-designer was responsible for recruiting their own models from among the rest of the student body, fitting their items to each model, and coordinating each overall look including hairstyles, makeup, and accessories.
As the house lights dimmed and the music began, the theater transformed into a runway with student-models strutting up and down the illuminated aisles and across the stage. Each of the 28 models wore a different piece created by the designers including skirts, tops, pants, evening looks, and more. The audience cheered and applauded each creation before all the models and designers converged on the stage to end the show with a final bow.
Congratulations to Ms. Liggett and all of the designers and the models for their work all semester. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Fulton, and the stage crew for their work behind the scenes to make the show a success.
