Plenty of pride was in the air as The Storm King School celebrated Spirit Week culminating in a pep rally and a string of Homecoming athletic games on Saturday, October 21. It was indeed a time to cheer, with most of our teams emerging victorious both at home and away.

The fun began on Tuesday, October 17, when many students and faculty set aside SKS Dress Code to dress up for “Twinsie Tuesday.” On Wednesday, everyone wore SKS colors, and “Throwback Thursday” and “Fandom Friday” rounded out the week with some great outfits. On Friday, Homecoming Eve, students expressed their blue and gold spirit with window painting at Orr Commons and enjoyed an evening campfire with s’mores.

The fun continued at Saturday’s noon pep rally, where senior athletes were honored in front of a cheering, horn-blowing crowd. “It brings the school community closer together,” said sophomore Thanya Chandran, who made signs for the pep rally and participated in the window painting contest. “Homecoming got me in the school spirit for all the games on Saturday, “ she said.

As much as Homecoming is about school spirit, athletics, and fun, it is also about alumni, identity, and community. This year, through the combined efforts of the Alumni & Development Office and the Office of Student & Residential Life, alumni also played an important role in the week’s activities. Amidst the excitement of Spirit Week, 13 successful alums from all over the country “came home” to participate in Career Night, which was held on Thursday, October 19. Before the event, each one had the chance to chat with our students during formal dinner and reconnect with the Mountain.

The next morning, John Meynardie ‘77, a US Attorney in Mississippi, gave a powerful presentation to the students about the opioid crisis. On Homecoming Saturday, members of SKS’ new Alumni Council took a break from their meeting to participate in the pep rally and cheer on their alma mater on the athletic field.

All in all, Spirit Week and Homecoming were a great success and served to bring the school community even closer together in our 150th year.
