This week was action-packed for Storm King Athletics with the boys and girls varsity basketball teams enjoying exciting wins, and the varsity wrestlers bringing home results to be proud of.

On Wednesday, January 22, the boys varsity basketball team tipped off on their home court facing Greens Farms Academy, edging the Dragons by a score of 57-49. The Cougars played consistent defense for 32 minutes, and for a second time this season, held the high-scoring visitors to below 50 points. According to Coach Lewis, standout defensive efforts were given by senior Myles Debrecourt and junior Chris Smith. Offensively, Captain Rashad Ramserran paced the home team with 5 3-point shots in the 1st half, ultimately finishing with a team-high 19 points. The scoring was more balanced in the 2nd half with clutch contributions from every team member on the court.

 

 

The following Saturday, January 25,  Storm King’s Varsity Boys traveled to Greenwich, Connecticut’s Brunswick School to face the Bruins who ultimately defeated Storm King 65-61. The Class A Bruins shot a high percentage from the floor and the line, holding off a second-half Cougar comeback. Storm King was down 54-36 before closing on a 25-11 run which fell a few possessions short.  The Cougars were led by sophomore Josiah Diaz’s 17 points.  Storm King currently stands at 9 wins and 2 losses for the season and has the opportunity to bounce back with road games in Connecticut this week at The Master’s School and King School.

 

 

The girls varsity basketball team also enjoyed a resounding victory versus Marvelwood’s Pterodactyls on Wednesday, January 22. The effort was led by senior captains Samantha McCullough, Naunet Leonhardes-Barboza, and Linyin Wang, bringing the Cougars to a 44-27 win over their HVAL rivals. The girls also had a pleasant surprise when a Storm King Alumnus, Tom Delaney, Class of ’58, appeared in the bleachers to cheer them on and chat with them after the game.  The girls currently stand with a 3-3 record and face Poughkeepsie Day School at home on Monday, January 27 on their home court.

 

 

The Storm King Wrestlers traveled to Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, CT, on Wednesday, January 22, bringing home results to be proud of.  Coach Gillett reported that Cougars emerged with 2 impressive victories versus 3 schools, overcoming Marvelwood 54-18 and host Hamden Hall 42-30 before falling by 1 point based on criteria in a tiebreaker to Forman School, 43-42. SKS wrestlers with pins that day include senior Noah Mendlewski with 2 pins, and sophomore Aditya Mansury, freshmen Eljius Prifti and Tim Chong, and junior Won Kim with 1 pin each.

 

 

On Saturday, January 25, the boys made the trek to Martin Luther School in Queens, NY, to compete in a tournament that included the top New York private schools and 4 top New York public schools.  According to their coaches, the Cougars took the mat and demonstrated the courage and grit that made them and the entire school community proud, finishing 8th out of 14 highly competitive teams. Several Storm King wrestlers were awarded medals including 8th grader Elijah Graziosi for 2nd place; freshmen Sean Ryan for 3rd place, Warren Stone for 4th place, and Tim Chong for 4th place; sophomores Aditya Mansuri for 4th place and Jack Kidd for 2nd place. “This was an outstanding performance considering the level of the competition in the tournament and the age and experience of our boys–a fantastic job by both wrestlers and coaches,” commented Athletic Director Joseph Graziosi upon the team’s return. Next up, the wrestlers will face Marvelwood on Wednesday, January 27.

The Storm King Varsity Bowlers also competed Wednesday, January 22 emerging victorious versus NYMA in 2 out of 3 games. The Cougars started out strong in Game 1 to finish 111 to 96 but lost some momentum in Game 2 causing them to fall 96-124, before rallying to overcome their rival 130-91 in the final game.
