January is an exciting month for SKS Athletics with continuing varsity basketball action and the start of competition for the SKS Wrestlers and Co-ed JV Basketball.
After showcasing their skills in Washington, D.C. in December at the She Got Game Classic followed by the Nickerson Classic, the girls varsity basketball team hit the court running against Northfield Mount Hermon on Saturday, January 7. Storm King showed excellent teamwork and tenacity to the final buzzer, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hoggers, who edged out the Cougars, 49-56, in the 4th quarter.
Next up, the girls will travel to Brooklyn’s Nazareth High School for the weekend of January 13-14 to participate in the 2023 Rose Classic Super Jam. There, they will have the chance to gain high-level exposure with the nation’s top women’s college basketball programs and corporate sponsors. The Cougars will be back on their home court on Wednesday, January 18, when they host Greenwich Country Day School.
The varsity boys basketball team entered Semester 2 strong, sporting the #4 ranking in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference (NEPSAC) Class C. Coming off a resounding win on the final day of December’s Storm King Tournament, the team played their next game on Saturday, January 7, hosting Connecticut’s Capital Prep Harbor. According to Coach Cook, the team showed excellent teamwork and determination throughout the game, ultimately falling to the Sharks 58-80. In their next tip-off against Darrow on Wednesday, January 11, home advantage was with the Cougars who beat the Ducks 61-50. Next up, the Cougars will host the Hamden Hall Hornets on Saturday, January 14.
January is marked by the first games scheduled for Storm King’s JV basketball team. The Cougars entered the court roaring when they faced the Darrow Ducks on the road Wednesday, January 11. The team displayed excellent teamwork and skills throughout the game bringing them a resounding win, 32-13, over the Ducks. For their second game of the season, the JV Cougars will travel to Troy, New York, to face Redemption Christian Academy.
January also brings the first competitions for the SKS Wrestlers, who have been practicing hard since before the winter break. Their first bout takes place on Saturday, January 14, when the Cougars travel to Connecticut’s Forman School to face the Lions. Go, Cougars!
