With the largest first-day enrollment in its history, The Storm King School represents students from 23 nations this year. For many of these students and their families, the School’s diversity is one of the deciding factors that made Storm King their #1 choice. With 70% of these students living on campus full time, instilling a sense of community and the feeling of “home away from home” poses unique challenges. That’s where the work of the Storm King School Parents Association (SKS PA) comes in.
According to the SKS PA’s president Grace Vazquez (P’19), the primary mission of the group is to support the overall school community and enhance student life through “dialogue, connectivity, the exchange of ideas, fundraising, and volunteering.” All parents of current Storm King School students are members of the SKS PA whether they live here in the Hudson Valley or across the globe. The SKS PA meets on campus every month and all parents are encouraged to participate.
The SKS PA will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 25, at 6:00 pm in the Smidt Conference Room located in Orr Commons.
For parents who are able to attend meetings, “participation brings opportunities to get to know other parents, collaborate on a variety of projects and events, and helps to provide exceptional programs and resources for our students,” explains Mrs. Vazquez. “Parents who are not in the local area can also participate by receiving meeting notes, contributing ideas, and giving in support of fundraising initiatives organized by the SKS PA. We look forward to everyone’s participation this year.”
To further strengthen and focus their efforts, Mrs. Vazquez explains that the SKS PA will collaborate with the Storm King School Student Council, the campus Activities Committee, and the SKS Development Office even more closely this year. “Together, we will determine the best ways to support our students and our community. The combination of ideas, enthusiasm, and manpower will allow us to execute our events more effectively, raise more funds, and provide more fun to everyone involved.”
