This spring, Storm King juniors Luis G. ’26 and Ethan W. ’26 boosted awareness about sustainability on campus by presenting an app that helps users monitor their carbon footprint. The students introduced the “CarbonApp” to their peers with a live demo, a video introduction, and a walkthrough of the app’s capabilities—all just in time for the School’s Earth Day celebrations. The app is the latest development in their year-long EcoVision startup project.

Held at the Walter Reade Jr. Theatre, the launch event drew an enthusiastic audience. “We were super excited to introduce the CarbonApp in front of a great group of students,” said Luis. “It’s been a long journey, and sharing what we’ve worked on with everyone was a huge moment for us.”

The app uses AI technology to track daily carbon emissions and helps users discover more sustainable lifestyle choices. “The matching engine looks at your behavior and preferences and then suggests sustainable alternatives. Users also have the option to purchase environmentally friendly products and services directly through the app.”

In addition to demonstrating the app’s key features—including the carbon emissions tracker and a hands-on demo—the launch event also included the announcement of a special competition supported by one of their partners in the project, Spacemilk. “We wanted to get people involved and show them that sustainability can be engaging and action-driven,” said Luis.

Since the launch, the students report steady growth and user engagement with downloads of the app up more than 125%. “Feedback has been very positive and users are having fun with it,” noted Luis. “It’s also impressive that the app has had zero crashes to date—no small feat for a new platform,” added Ethan.

Luis and Ethan also expressed gratitude to their faculty mentor, Mr. Siddiqui, who supported the EcoVision initiative throughout the year. “He really helped us stay focused and kept us moving forward,” they explained.

The EcoVision team is already looking ahead. “We’re expanding our partner platform and rolling out new features like visual carbon emission indicators and enhanced in-app purchasing,” said Ethan. “There’s a lot more to come.”

Many thanks to Luis and Ethan for their continued work to increase awareness about sustainability and for providing a tool that helps others reduce their carbon footprint in an engaging way.
