Excitement is building at The Storm King School as our community gears up for the new semester. From the dormitories and the dining hall to our classrooms and shared spaces, the campus is buzzing with activity while faculty and staff get ready for the start of classes on February 8. As it was in the fall, their goals remain the same: to provide our students with a first-class education and help each of them reach their full potential whether learning in person or online.
As a part of their readiness plan, all faculty members will participate in the School’s annual “In Service” meetings leading up to the first day of school. This year, the virtual sessions will take place during the first week of February and several faculty members will make presentations to their peers.
What’s on the agenda? Some highlights include:
- Even more individualized and positive approaches for homework and assessments
- Strategies for using writing to help forge connections with students and help them set attainable goals
- New methods, tools, and technology in the hybrid classroom
- A workshop on online collaboration tools including Zoom, Google Slides, Jamboard, Flipgrid, and Kahoot! to further enhance student collaboration
- Using the Sketchbook app to create and assign graphics projects for the students
- A Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) presentation on motivating student-athletes
“I am optimistic that these teacher-driven workshops will help our faculty continue to improve upon our students’ experiences with new ideas and tools, and that they will generate even more discussions and collaborative efforts across departments,” explained Dean of Faculty Jeremy Freeman. “Our hybrid and virtual classrooms continue to be a challenge, so these in-service workshops will help us all reconnect and hone our skills in preparation for the new semester. With these sessions, I’m confident we will get off to a good start and we can’t wait to see students in our classrooms and online once again soon.”
