January was a month filled with spirit and sportsmanship for Storm King Athletics. While some Cougar teams celebrated solid victories, others experienced tough losses. Whether on the basketball court, wrestling mat, or fencing piste, each team has shown resilience and determination, setting the stage for more exciting competition as the season continues into February.

Boys Varsity Basketball

January has been a winning month for Boys Varsity Basketball, with Storm King advancing undefeated in a string of impressive victories. The Cougars started the month strong with an exciting 56-51 win over Hamden Hall on January 11 followed by a 56-51 overtime victory against Harvey on January 15. Other highlights included a commanding 75-56 victory over South Kent on January 22 and a nail-biting 67-61 win over Winchendon on January 25. Coach Luongo praised the team’s resilience, especially in tight games, and looks forward to building on these wins moving forward.

Girls AA Prep Basketball

Upon their return from Winter Break, the Girls Prep Basketball team had a challenging month filled with several competitive matchups. Notable wins came on January 12 against Winchendon (62-50) and January 25 at MacDuffie (51-42). Despite their best efforts, they faced tough losses against Hamden Hall, NMH, St. Luke’s, Darrow, Worcester, and Greenwich Country Day. Coach Tang says the Cougars continue to show determination and heart, and will be working hard to improve their record as the season moves forward.

Fencing

The fencing team traveled to tournaments at New Jersey’s Manchen Academy of Fencing and Rockland Community College for the Morris Cup, with a bright moment on January 26 when they placed at Candlewood. Sam L. ’26 and Daniel Z. ’25 earned 2nd and 3rd place respectively amidst a highly competitive field. The fencers continued their training and preparation, setting their sights on more upcoming matches and opportunities to hone their skills on the piste.

Wrestling

The Storm King wrestlers had two weigh-ins in January at Hamden Hall and Woodhall. Participation in limited weight classes and forfeits challenged their scorings, but Coach Sullivan is confident that as the team prepares to host the HVAL finals in February, their consistent training and dedication will lead to more favorable results.
