October is the pinnacle of the fall season for Storm King Athletics. It’s been a great month for the Cougars overall, with the boys and girls cross country teams running strong toward the HVAL Championship tournament and Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer holding their own with several more wins on the scoreboard.
Cross Country
Following a successful Storm King Invitational on September 25, the SKS harriers ran four more invitationals in October. SKS juniors Sophia L. ’26 and Liz U. ’26 continue to lead the girls cross country runners, consistently placing in the top 5 in their races at Darrow, Marvelwood, and Woodstock Country Day. Not far behind are fellow juniors Eva G. ’26, Ava O. ’26, Karina L. ’26 and sophomore Kayla V. ’27 who consistently place in the top 10. For the boys, sophomores Liam M. ’27, Eric W. ’27, and junior Josh M. ’26 lead the pack with consistent finishes in the top 10. With Storm King placing in the top 3 overall at every meet, both the boys and the girls teams are poised for victory in their final runs for the HVAL Championship trophy at Woodstock to close out the month.
Boys Varsity Soccer
October has been a great month for Boys Varsity Soccer. After a disappointing loss hosting Darrow early in the month, the Cougars entered a winning streak and never looked back. First, SKS claimed victory with a score of 4-2 hosting EF Academy, followed by decisive wins on the road at Darrow (6-3), at home versus Christian Heritage (2-0), and away at Oakwood (7-1) adding 4 wins to the scoreboard. According to Coach Bennett, “We’ve dominated the run of play throughout the month, and we’ve enjoyed some of our best field time yet this season.” The Cougars will play two more games with Harvey and Marvelwood to close out their season before heading to the HVAL playoffs in early November.

Girls Varsity Soccer
Following a loss at Sacred Heart Greenwich earlier in the month, the girls varsity soccer team trained hard leading up to their next games on the road against Oakwood then Wooster. Their efforts and determination paid off for the Cougars, who prevailed over the Lions, 4-2, in an exciting match. Unfortunately, the girls lost momentum when they faced the Generals, suffering a loss, 0-3, followed by another 0-3 result hosting Harvey. The Cougars hope for redemption hosting EF Academy followed by their final league game at Oakwood to close out their season before hosting the HVAL final on November 8th.

The girls varsity volleyball team has worked hard in October both on and off the court, adding 5 wins and 2 losses to their scoreboard. Early in the month, the Cougars enjoyed two decisive wins in straight sets, 3-0, hosting Oakwood followed by Marvelwood on the road. On their home court, the girls lost some momentum falling 0-3 in a tough game versus Harvey but rebounded quickly with a double victory over Faith Christian at home (3-0), then on the road (3-2). Next up, Storm King hosted EF Academy where the Cougars fought hard but ended down, 0-3, versus The Storm. Taking a positive turn the following day, the girls emerged victorious hosting the American School for the Deaf, winning in straight sets, 3-0. To close out October, the Cougars fell short on the road at Wooster ending on the downside of a 2-3 score.
