Each fall, the Storm King School community comes together for one of its most cherished traditions—Mountain Day. Dating back to the early 1930s, this annual event encourages students and faculty to step away from their daily routines and embark on a scenic hike up Storm King Mountain. It's more than just a trek through the woods—it's a tradition that builds community, honors the School's history, and sets a positive tone for the academic year ahead.

Mountain Day began in the fall of 1932, when Storm King's sixth Headmaster, Anson Barker, gave students the day off from classes to explore the trails of Black Rock Forest. The hike ended with a festive picnic, and the experience proved so memorable that it became a permanent fixture on the School's annual calendar.

This year, Mountain Day was no exception. With crisp September weather and clear skies overhead, students and faculty gathered in the morning and set off in their advisory groups, winding their way up to Butter Hill, the summit of Storm King Mountain.

At the top, the reward was spectacular: a 360-degree view of the Hudson River Valley, Black Rock Forest, and the distant Catskill Mountains. After a well-deserved rest and traditional group photos at the summit, hikers returned to campus where a delicious barbecue lunch awaited them on Ledoux Terrace.

Head of School Lisa Shambaugh reflected on the day: "Mountain Day is a tradition that truly embodies who we are as a school. It's challenging, rewarding, and boosts our spirit as a community. Watching students help each other up the trail and celebrate together at the top was inspiring. I hope they carry that sense of accomplishment and unity with them throughout the year."

As The Storm King School begins its 158th academic year, Mountain Day once again reminds us of our storied history and strong sense of community. Special thanks go to the faculty and staff who guided students on the trails and to the dining staff for the outstanding meal that capped off the morning.
