Thomas “TJ” Coté ’01 is receiving the SKS Alumni Humanitarian Award for his lifelong commitment to building and reforming systems that expand access, equity, and dignity for underserved communities. Through the company he founded, NextGen Management, TJ leads multiple public-impact organizations whose work improves healthcare access, strengthens mental health support for college students, advances pediatric research collaboration, and expands care for vulnerable populations. As CEO and lead lobbyist for the New York State Optometric Association, he successfully advocated to expand access to eye care for rural, low-income, minority, and elderly communities, while also creating a public–private partnership that provides comprehensive eye exams to underserved children. He has played a critical leadership role in supporting national pediatric research efforts and strengthening counseling center systems on college campuses—ensuring that young people receive the medical and mental health support they need to thrive. In addition, TJ helped advance marriage equality in New York and later led advocacy efforts that contributed to the passage of the Child-Parent Security Act, protecting families formed through gestational surrogacy. Across every role, TJ’s work reflects a deep commitment to repairing broken systems, expanding access to care, and ensuring that individuals and families are seen, protected, and supported.
