Whatever the season, the Spy Rock House with the Mountain behind it is a beautiful image that is fixed in the collective memory of all those who have been associated with The Storm King School. But perhaps nothing reminds us of our “home on the Mountain” more than a snow-covered image of this beloved house in winter, especially during the holidays.
For the School’s long line of headmasters and their families, Spy Rock has served not only as their home, but as a meeting place bustling with faculty, students, trustees, and parents. Many alumni who once lived on Spy Rock’s upper floor have memories of warm nights by the fireplace before heading up to their rooms. In recent years, many students have also made memories at Spy Rock decorating sugar cookies during the holiday season along with the Head of School Jon Lamb and his wife “Ms. Toni.”
Today, the Head of School resides at The Homestead, and the Spy Rock House has returned to its former use as a dormitory. As the future continues to unfold, generations of new boarding students, like the students and headmasters who lived there before them, will make memories of their own within Spy Rock’s walls for many years to come.
