The winter sports season is officially underway, and The Storm King School’s boys varsity basketball team set the tone at their first game on November 19, hosting Brunswick School from Greenwich, CT. Despite a tough loss, the Cougars opened their season with high energy, persistence, and many standout moments that signaled a promising year ahead.

Storm King came out strong in the first half, moving the ball well through a feverish back-and-forth, executing smart plays against a highly competitive Bruins squad.  Coach Mike Luongo praised the team’s effort, noting that the matchup provided valuable insight into the group’s potential. “I thought the team did a really good job against a very tough opponent,” he commented. While acknowledging that there is still work to do, he emphasized the team’s opportunities for growth and the bright spots already emerging.

Luongo also highlighted the players who set the tone at the season opener, adding, “There are plenty of positives to take away from our first game. I’m excited to see the development of our younger players and also the growth of our senior leadership. Captains Armani C. ’26 and Nick H. ’26 played great for us and Josh M. ’26 continued his high-effort style as well.”

With their first game behind them, the boys varsity team will travel to Greenwich Country Day School right after the Thanksgiving Break as they continue to build momentum. They will then turn their attention to hosting the Storm King Tip-Off Tournament, which begins on December 5.

Across campus, other Storm King Cougar teams are gearing up for their season openers as well. The girls HVAL basketball team will host EF Academy on Wednesday, December 3, while the boys HVAL team will travel to EF Academy for their own opener on the same day. The following afternoon, the girls prep basketball team will travel to Princeton, NJ, to face the Hun School in their first competition of the season.

With every team practicing hard since the start of winter training, the Cougars are ready to embark on an exciting and competitive season. Let the winter games begin!
