The Storm King School Model UN Team traveled to Boston, Massachusetts recently to participate in the 19th Annual Boston Invitational United Nations (BosMUN) Conference. The event took place on Friday, February 7, to Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the renowned Boston Marriott-Copley Hotel. SKS delegates included junior Dominique Gooden, sophomores Yulin Jin, Alex Neighbors and Scout Zischke who represented Egypt, and senior Model UN veteran Pierce Pramuka who served as a delegate in a unique Ad Hoc Crisis Committee.
BosMUN is a three-day simulation of the United Nations held annually each February in downtown Boston for high school students. The event is organized by Boston University’s International Affairs Association and is fully student-run. This year, BosMUN hosted over 1,500 delegates from all over the nation who assumed the roles of UN representatives and members of other international bodies and national cabinets in order to debate day-to-day issues that confront world leaders, and eventually draft resolutions in response. During the conference, students learned the importance of balancing national interests with the needs of the international community, while also learning about the powers and limitations of international negotiation.
SKS’ History and Social Sciences Department Chair Michael Hauser, who mentors SKS’ Model UN Team, was very pleased with the performances of our delegates and the overall experience. “The school community can be proud of the outstanding work done by our BosMUN Team in three days of persuading, influencing, researching, and debating many critical global issues including Asymmetric Warfare, Atomic Energy Safeguards and Technology Development, Climate Change in the Maldives, Access to Immunizations, and others,” explained Mr. Hauser. “The results of these all-day and late-night efforts are plans, approaches, and formal resolutions to overcome these global challenges. There was also time to meet and make many new friends.”
The Boston event was excellent practice for the team of Storm King delegates who will travel to Manhattan later this month to represent Bosnia-Herzegovina at the National High School Model UN (NHSMUN) Conference on February 28 through March 2.
